In the sophomore tourney they defeated Deerfield 51 to 45 with Dan DeJa and Dave Smith each getting 12 pts. The young Warriors had a chance to blow the Deerfield five out of the gym in the first half, but mistakes and missed free throws let the visitors hang in there at the intermission. John Huff 's 5 of 6 charity tosses in the final period iced the game for the local crew. The victory clinches at least a t ie for first in the Round Robin tourney. Wes Kopsell played his best defensive game of I he young season, and the whole team played steller defense during the second half Dave Williams forced several key turnovers in ihe final few minutes to insure the Warrior victory. As Coach Wirtz said after 'he game. "In the second half we played a patient offense, and hit 9 of 10 from the field." That is good shooting in anybody's league. Jingle bells. The weather has been so perfect (Tucson residents please note) that people remark they can't believe Christmas is near. I have been informed that my shopping is nearly finished. There is nothing like having your own shopping service. Stores seem busy in spite of recession talk. Storekeepers and their clerks will be glad to close shop on Christmas Eve and hurry home to slip off their shoes. Thought our day would be dull until the phone rang and our daughter's voice sang out "I'll be home for Christmas". That should liven up the ranch. Mrs. Ben Justen keeps a diary and reports we had deep snow and 8 below at this time last year. From Arkansas comes a nice card with a nicer note that gave S.I.H. a real pepper upper. Kind words from the likes o' Harold Phannenstill (Kenosha) and other readers gives us the old spirit. Santa Claus is for children, but most of us are kids at this time of year. Memories never fail to bring us back to childhood days. At our home, we had to hike off to bed early on Christmas Eve so Santa could come down the fireplace chimney, set up the tree and leave our gifts. Used to look up the chimney and wondered if ol' Santa wouldn't get stuck in there. Our tree was decorated with strands of popcorn. Stockings were hung con spicuously and each of us vied to get one of our mother's stockings. They held more. , Apples were plentiful. Other fresh fruit wasn't. Each sock had an orange in the toe. Good old Santa! 4 There wasn't any trouble i On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbi*l Rassling Warriors" picked up third g Marty Sobczak's getting us off to bed. Early the next morning found us either bounding down the stairway or sliding down the bannister. With stove heat, the front parlor wasn't open much in wintertime The sliding doors from the living room were closed. So were the swinging doors into the cold hallway. Old rag rugs sealed the open space at the bottom of the doors and open spaces on the sides were stuffed. Our father built some booming fires in the fireplace as Mom ad monished that he would burn the house down. Santa left some games and sometimes very thoughtfully brought fleece lined long underwear. After a hearty breakfast (Mom thought a big bowl of oatmeal "stayed with you"), it was time to bundle up and walk a mile to old St. Patrick's Church on Court Street. (I couldn't figure out why I shouldn't join my pals at the Methodist Church less than a block away.) That was a long, cold walk. Mom carried a big fur muff to shield her face, especially near the present site of the McHenry Savings and Loan building. The wind whistled across the open space from the Mill Pond to the west. That was the way it was. Today means having your children and grandchildren with you. It means happiness when friends or relatives write, phone or come a - callin'. It means turning a button if we need more heat in the house. It means riding to church in comfort and joining the true spirit of Christmas. It means thinking of others and doing for some less fortunate. It means being over whelmed with the spirit of goodness and promising God to right any wrong we may have done to others. It means showing our love. It means good will toward man. AND -- It means sincerely wishing each of you a • MERRY CHRISTMAS! Tuesday night Bob Zeller :g: missed the Dundee game due to illness, and let's hope in :•£ jiji the future this season that all Warriors stay healthy. I jjjj: i£i really think the remedy for all this illness is to go out and :•£ jij: hit a few off the practice tee. Only an upset g: jij: from Marian Central can set the young Warriors in a tie. & After last week's "Down Memory Lane", had a chance :£ jiji to visit with the grand old man of McHenry Sports "Mac g jiji McCracken". It seems that this was "Mac's" first year at :j:j jiji McHenry in 1929, and he gave me a lowdown on all the g ijij players mentioned. . ig Mac has a memory that would put an elephant to :j:; shame, as he almost recalled play by play of the game. g: Before going down Memory Lane once again, I would ;j:j ijij like to take this opportunity to wish all Warrior fans very :j:j Happy Holidays from the Warrior coaching staff and :j:j ijij administration. They appreciate your support, and hope it ijij ijij will continue. ijij ijij After giving a lot of thought about this week's Memory ijij ijij Lane game, I decided that since I haven't heard from an ;j;j ijij old friend for several years, I would put in a game that he ;j;j ijij will long remember. Although I am not fn the same age % ijij class as "Zeke" Bacon, nevertheless I had the wonderful ijij ijij experience of teaching his three daughters at St. Mary's ijij ijij of Woodstock, and found him to be a good and true friend ijij ijij along with his wonderful wife. He never missed a game ijij ijij while his daughters were cheerleaders, and was a true ijij 8 sports fan. i£ i;ii We are going back to the 6th McHenry County tourney ijij ijij at Crystal Lake in 1925. The Warriors won the tourney, but ijij ijij the game to be talked about was the semi-final game ijij i;ii against the Marengo Indians. "Zeke", who scored 21 ijij i;ji points in this game high for the tourney, and also wound ijij iiji up as the leading scorer with 33 pts., led the Warriors to an ijij jiii amazing 34 to 4 win over Marengo. Present day coaches ijij vii take notice the half time score. Warriors 25 - Marengo 0. ijij jiji (Boy, would Ken Ludwig like to have a score like that this ijij jiji season). ijij I am sure in the near future I will receive a card with a ijij jiji nice picture of a green golf course, while we hope it won't ijij iiji happen, but can expect in the near future a lot of snow. Mrs. S.I.H. mjssed the Crystal Lake South game the iji jiji other night, had to go shopping for the "boss". The iji jiji Warriors lost and we could blame her, as in the past she iji i£i has been good luck. Have a Merry Christinas. 6TH McHENRY COUNTY TOURNEY at CRYSTAL LAKE, MARCH, 1925 McHenry Marengo Sec.
