This is to induce vomiting if someone, usually a small child, accidentally drinks or eats some household product that is poisonous. But not all poisonings should be treated by induc ing vomiting. Some are cor rosive, caustic substances that burn the linings of throat and stomach. Bringing them back up would merely add to the damage. So, the Ameri can Medical Association points out, it is most wise to make a quick call to your family doctor or pediatrician be-fore administering the Syrup of Ipecac. The label on your small bottle of Ipecac should give the name of the product, proper dosage and poisoning conditions for which it should not be used. If i you suspect someone has accidentally taken a poisonous substance in your household, have someone phone the doctor. Save and give to the physician or hos pital the poison container with label intact. Do not induce vomiting, says the AMA First Aid Guide book, if,the patient is unconscious, is having con vulsions, has pain or burning in mouth or throat, or is known to have swallowed a corrosive poison, such as toilet bowl cleaner, silver nitrate, lye, drain cleaner, washing soda, ammonia water, or chlorine bleach. Give milk or water if the victim is alert and can swal low. But get him to the doc tor fast. If the poison is noncorro- sive and your doctor tells you to induce vomiting, then administer the Syrup of Ipecac. When vomiting be gins, keep the victim's face down, with head lower that hips. Much better is to pre vent poisoning. Keep all medicines and household chemicals out of the reach of children. Do not store non- edible products on shelves used for storing food. Read labels before using chemical products. Never re-use con tainers of chemical sub stances. Do not transfer poi sonous substances to un labeled containers. The temperature also took a decided drop, hovering around the zero mark, with every indication promising a real old fashioned white Christmas. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 28, 1939) The McHenry Fire department was called to extinguish a small grass fire on Christmas eve, on the west side of the Fox river near Sullivan's place south of town. The blaze, which was noticed about six o'clock, was quickly put out. Hebron again trimmed McHenry's basketball team in the first round of the county tournament at St. Mary's gym, Woodstock. The score was 45 to 16. McHenry had little chance against the rangy Hebron team after they hit stride. Richard Freund went out on fouls in the first half and McHenry's defense suffered from there on. Laures was back in action at both for ward and guard posts, flashing some of the form that he showed in the past two years. In S.I.H.'s New Year's resolutions he promises to remember each and every member of the "key snydicate". i'wn.m t-t ivui YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of December 22, 1954) After a year during which members of School Board 15 and Junior high teachers have been working out plans for a necessary expansion project, a program has begun.to materialize. At a special meeting with the architect, it was decided that to meet immediate needs for sixth, seventh and eighth grade pupils, it will be necessary to put a $630,000 bond issue to a vote of the public. This is expected to be done in late January or early February.. McHenry's Christmas tree on a raft in the Fox river is not only attracting attention locally but in other parts of the country. From Elsie Feiereisel of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of McCullom Lake, came a letter which con tained a clipping from a Sarasota paper, carrying a long story on the unusual tree. The McHenry Warriors lost a 58-44 game to the Blue Streaks at Woodstock, but went down fighting with all they had. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 23, 1969) By a vote of 4 to 2, the board of McHenry County college voted to accept the Ladd property, south of the West campus high school, as a site for the college. Action concluded many weeks of ueuaie sometimes neaiea, in which the board considered five pieces of land, four of them close to the city of McHenry. Following the vote, President Forest Etheredge recommended that the board authorize a boundary survey and two appraisals of the Ladd site. This will enable the school to take the necessary steps to obtain the approval of the Illinois State college board. One more requirement is a visit to the site by members of the Illinois Junior college board staff. The streaking McHenry Warriors blasted out two more opponents this past weekend as they downed the struggling Blue Streaks of Woodstock, 69 to 51, and edged the rugged Mustangs of Mundelein 76 to 61. The conference victory enabled the orange and black to remain in a first play tie with the highly touted ZeeBees of Zion Benton, while the other win ran the Warriors season record to 8-1.
