Perhaps this is due to the heavily advert ised vi tamins sold over the counter of most drugstores and supermarkets^It 's hard to believe that a proper diet wil l provide al l the necessary vitamins needed j, by the body. But i t is t rue. "RDA" is the recognized term for Recommended Daily Allowances of vi tamins to supply the body's needs. I t is seen frequently on cereal boxes and is worth noting since many cereals provide very few . vi tamins in terms of daily needs f Acknowledging the reali ty , that , most people don' t fol low i proper diets , physicians S>ften recommend the vitamin supplements sold at the local s tores. For those who would l ike to try using food to supply daily vitamin requirements, the following information will be of in terest . Vitamin A aids in building and growing body cells . I t is ^especial ly essential for children. I t helps build T^istance to infection and keeps the skin healthy. I t is significant in eye funet kcn"!.̂ , Vitamin A is found in l iver, whole milk. milk fa: products! egg yolk and fort if ied margarine. Vitamin B is a group of more than 15 known vitamins and is cal led Vitamin B Complex. Bl or thiamine prevents and cures, . , beriberi , a disease of the nervous system. Since Bl is in l iver, meat (pork especial ly) , milk, whole grain or enriched cereals . wheat germ and nuts, one can appreciate that beriberi is not a problem in the U.S. because these foods are readily available to most people. ^ Vitamin B2 or r iboflavin is important for growth, healthy skin and eye func tion. It also promotes the body's use of oxygen". B2 occurs in milk, cheese, liver, meats, eggs, fish, green leafy vegetables and whole or enriched grains. Vitamin B6 occurs in meat, liver, kidney, whole grains, soybeans and peanuts; and Vitamin B12 is present in liver, kidney, milk.^ salt-water fish, lean me<mand oysters. jVuich has been said about Vitamin c (ascorbic acid). Some say it prevents colds. We know it prevents scurvy. While citrus fruits are the primary source of vitamin C and other sources are tomatoes, raw cabbage, strawberries and can taloupe. it is the Puerto Rican cherry which has the highest concentration of vitamin C known. However, it is a little, difficult to rush out and find a Puerto Rican cherry every day in McHenry. Since Vitamin C must be replenished daily, the mere common sources are recommetraed. Sore 'gums, hemorrhages under the skin and general fatigue are some symptoms of Vitamin C deficiency. , A review of the recom mended food sources will indicate that., vitamins come in basic foods which should form the nucleus of a nutritional diet. Other vitamins and their part in nutrition will be explored next. . , -- . «== \ SpecialSiicct 'Pac&a.qe $14 1 -- 8 x 10 Portrait 2 - 5 x 7 P o r t r a i t s 6 Double Image, Oval or Vignetted Package Y o u r C h o i c e A t T i m e P o r t r a i t * A r e T a k e n A d d 8 - W a l l e t s $ 3 . 9 5 A d d 2 - 5 * 7 $ 3 9 5 A d d 1 - 8 x 1 0 $ 3 . 9 5 Parents will be notified by mail for portrait delivery date at store and must be present when Minors are photographed. *' WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9th thru SATURDAY, JANUARY 10AM • 1PM, 3PM - 5 PM HORNSDYS FAMILY CENTER 4400 nr.
