sT * tM AINDEALEE - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1980 SPOUTS Consolation In the recent North Chicago Holiday Tour nament, Coach Vern Petersen's McHenry High girls' team won the con solation chaxnp^pnship. In the bpemng game the Warriors fell by the wayside to Stevenson by the score of 44 to 39. But from that time on it was" all Warriors. The next game found the girls pitted against Round Lake, and with 4 Warriors in double figures, led by Sue Hut chinson's 18 pts., the Warriors won easily 71 to 38. The ZeeBees from Zion were next on the list, and the * Warriors never trailed and came out a winner 62 to 45. Hutchinson again led the scorers with 16, and Terri Bohlman and Vicky Kopsell each had 15. Defeat Rich East 53-51 In" the consolation championship, the Warriors played their best game\>f the season. After a 15 to 10 first period Warrior lead, the two teams battled right down to the final horn. The Warriors trailed by two at the in termission 29 to 27, and were down by 4 going into the final period. The final period saw the Warriors overcome the deficit, grab the lead and hang on for a big win. Woodstock Streaks Out-Wrestle Warriors Found a note on my desk relating that a lady phoned to complaih there was nothing in the sports section about the Elgin basketball tournament before it star ted. So that sent me scurrying to the files where we found a two column, two line head in the Dec. 21 issue )rominently above a story, ^at told the who, when ana aere. I'm sure there was otnter mention, bilt looked no farmer. teams in the tour- fent were listed, but their Ings were not shown. Another part of the criticism was that we didn't print a map directing fans to the Elgfn gyjn^5ievter thought of it. That was don* in years when the Warriors^ played in such unfamiliar places as Rockford. Let the coaches take players out if their fouls are hurting the tesun. The Pittsburgh Steelers were too much for Houston even without the benefit of a questionable call on a Houston touchdown. From the replay, you couldn't prove it by us1, that 'is wasn't a touchdown. If the receiver didn't have possession, who did? A tall and talented Crown basketball team defeated the McHenry High girls last week by the score of 44 to &7. It left the Warriors l and 1 in the Fox Valley. Coach Vern Petersen said, . "It was just a case of leo much height on the part of the Vikings." Tomorrow the girls travel to Crystal Lake South, and on Saturday they are at Dundee for a 1:30 p.m. game. # McHenry vs. Crown Bohlman* Haddick Kopsell Connell Totals: Crown lenry Hutchinsor fg tp 16 fg ft tP Bowen * 4 0 8 Ziethen 7 0 14 Hynes 1 1 3 Smith 5 0 10 Eugene 4 0 8 Bum bales 0 1 Totals: 21 2 44 MCH / S 4 12 13 37 Crown 10 4 18 12 44 As inXhe past, when the various tournaments leading to Champaign come around, we will try a little harder. On the other side of the coin, the tournament games were covered in good style 'by Dick Rabbitt. We printed every word and every box score. Christmas brought me a new cane. Our 12-year old grandson, Brendan, sear ched for and found a limb from a tree with the right shape to finish off for a cane that looks like a shillelagh. Brendan generously gives credit to his ybunger sister, Aleen, for helpling {iim. That's a cane that can't buy. Of course, a rule is a rule and the interpretation depends on the vantage point of the man in the striped suit. Have always said Rocky Bleier could play on my team. The Rams - Tampa Bay game is on the tube right now as I try to write this with electricKlights going off and on. Musrbe a storm. Just car^t see how Abraham Lincoln did all his homework with candle light. Didn't know the results of that game until Eddie Bimbo told me. Felt better when Eddie said many people had trouble getting the game. Thought it was our set, not the station. The late Bob Weber fur nished us with a weekly calendar for more years than we can rgmember. He's a promising young lefthander who had the low est lefty ERA in the National League in 1979. His record was 10-5 (2.83 ERA) and manager Sparky Anderson thinks he'll give the Tigers the right-left pitching excel lence they need to be a con tender. „ With the addition of Richie Hebner at third base, the Tigers are a better infield club also for next season. They have several promising young outfielders in addition to LeFlore'-some who might be just as good and can take up the slack. The Tigers have disappointed fans in recent years, as Ralph Houk's teams failed to be competi tive. Mark Fidrych has been a disappointment, though he may be sound again. But with or without Fidrych, the Tigers under Anderson's direction look to be the con tender next year Detroit fans haye been expecting for three or four seasons.
