OPEN McHenry game. Sorry but I am a week late. I know many % of the players in the game along with fans who attended >: will remember it well. It was a classic, a game not only bench. If you can recall Coach Fulton went out to the foul line, only to be sent back by the great official Harvey Sanders PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, JANUARY U, 1980 LOOSE BALL-but it takes a Skyhawk bounce towards Lora Jacobs, at left, during Tuesday night's win over Beloit Catholic. Lora scored 12 pts., as the Skyhawks won their third win in a row, increasing their overall record to 4-2. Tuesday, Jan. 15 they travel to Harvard and Tuesday, Jan. 22, they host North Boone. The rrosh-gonh home games start at < p.m., andJhe Varsity follows. - ' STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Warrior Doubleheaders Next Three Weekends This will be a familiar cry for the next three weekends. The McHenry High Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig will take to the hardwood for the next three weekends, playing a conference game on Friday and a non- conference game on Saturday night. Tonight the Warriors host Fox Valley foe the Cary Grove Trojans. The Trojans of Jim Condill are the hard luck team of the area. They have lost four games by a margin of 14 pts., and their only win in the Fox Valley is a 80 to 69 victory over Woodstock. The Streaks later avenged that loss for their first win in the Wheeling tourney. The Trojans have the conference's leading scorer in Greg Meyer a 6V' guard and forward. The Cary ace is averaging 25 pts. per game in conference play, and will be the man the Warriors must stop tonight. Rounding out the starting team for the Trojans are, seniors Jim Ludin and John Wasiak, junior Neil Britt the quar terback of the Trojan football team, and sophomore Neil Brennan. The Warriors after getting on the winning rack in Fox Valley play last week at Woodstock, cannot take-the Trojans too lightly. They can explode any minute and the Warriors will have to be at their best tonight. Tomorrow night Coach Ken Ludwig will meet an old foe from the North Subur ban. "Moe Tharp" formerly of Zion is the coach of the Fremd Vikings. Fremd is in a rebuilding year, but nevertheless the veteran coach "Moe" has no plans to lay down and concede defeat. For you fans planning to go to Fremd, take Rt. 12 to Quinten Road. Turn right and go down until you get to the high school. DEFENSE-applied here by a Beloit Catholic eager gives Inge Dschida of the Johnsburg Skyhawks no shooting room. Inge passed off to Sue Dehn who sank her shot for the goal. Beloit's pressure on Dschida was not enough, as she led the Skyhawks in scoring with 15 points in their 47-30 win. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD EARL WALSH' So I Hear _. ORTS EDITOR' Thinking of a plan of at tack to get out another column, the trail led to some old scrapbooks. ' My mother kept a couple of books for me and enclosed a beautiful letter written to remind me that her 80th birthday was near. Always told her she thought more of her own birthday than she did of Christmas. One time Mom wrote to her brother Richard, making a big deal of approaching her 50th birthday. He sent her fifty dollars, then discovered it was only her 49th. The books contain many- items of interest including choice clippings from old Plaindealers. In March 1933. N.E. Barbian advertised a reduction in the price of his famous "Monogram" cigars which were made here in McHenry. "Nick" decided to4 reduce the price from 2 for 25 cents to 10 cents straight. Times were tough. Those were days when a~ fellow smoked 5 - centers through the week and lit up a 10 - center on Sunday. At the same t'ime Frank Gans and his orchestra advertised a dance in Weber's Hall at admission price of 25 cents for gents and 10 cents for ladies. Weber's Hall stood across the street from Laura Weber's home, now the McHenry Beach. Young people could rent the hall for two dollars a night for dance parties. For many years the Plaindealer ran a /'Per sonals" column. Eddie Buss. Sr. and Arlene Harrison Pearson were reporters assigned to the Nor thwestern Depot to report on natives coming and going. ->-frH|)at same year of 1933, "FredX; Schoewer spent a few days^ this week in In diana." And - "Mrs. F.E. Boger and daughters, Elizabeth and Harriett, spent Saturday in Elgin". People took long trips in those days. o Now, here's another -- "Mrs. Ray Page and little daughter returned home from Wjjodstock Hospital Saturday". They figured it paid to advertise in those days, too. Dr. C. Keller advertised good reading or sewing glasses for $2.85. Guaran teed. Steaks were selling for 17 cents a pound. There were cheaper cuts if you didn't want to go that high. McGee's were selling mens dress shirts for $1.00, collars attached. In the sports department, "Zeke" Bacon had this to say about a basketball game: The girls game was in the nature of an afternoon tea with part of the game being played under girls' rules and part under the boys' popular restrictions. The two teams would play awhile, take time out while subs and all swarmed upon the floor for a friendly chat, and then the game would be resumed with entirely dif ferent lineups. The score, I think , was 9-5, but no one. with the possible exception of those playing, knew who were the victors. But. it was fun. That's what the man wrote. Still in the scrapbook. "Can you read the last line?", an oculist asked his patient. "Sure", answered the5 patient, "CWDK--I'm not so good at pronouncing it, but I think he was left tackle at Notre Dame last year." Readers Digest Mom had many con tributions printed in the Chicago Tribune Wake Of The News. ^ One Remember Way Back When-- We made kitchen aprons, gathered full at the belt, with a pocket on the left side to prevent its catching on the pump handle when we 6went for as pail of fresh water from the nearby well9 So glad I looked through those books. Never would have known this: Q. - What male bird takes his turn setting on eggs to hatch them? A. - The ostrich. The hen sits by day. and her mate by- night. (Suppose the idea is to keep the old boy from straying around at night.) In a 1952 issue, a picture shows Mayor George P. Freund planting a kiss on the cheek of the Marine Day Queen, Charlene Dowe. A feature item from some paper started out "If coffee goes to 15 cents." Many times they had the Streaks on the ropes >•: jiji but could not put them away until the final minutes. I have :j:j jiji to commend on the large Warrior following at the game. jjji jij: Not only were the Rowdies in full force, but many fans jiji jij: that I haven't seen at a Warrior game in years were in j:-: jij: attendance. Gary Fields, former principal at Eastijij ;i;i Campus and now at Woodstock, remarked on the large ijij jiji Warrior crowd. The gym was packed to capacity, and that ijij jiji is a tribute to our Warriors. Took in the girls' game with Lake Zurich the other ijij $i night. Was really impressed with the team. Coach Vern ijij jiji Petersen is doing a bang up job, and I suggest to you fans, ijji jiji attend a game, you won't be disappointed. All games are iiij jiji at 6 p.m. for the frosh-soph, with the varsity game getting £i jiji under way about 7:15 p.m. gi Marty Sobczak is running into the same trouble he had iiii jiji last year. Illness and injuries seem to hit the "Rassling iiii jiji Warriors" just when it seems they are ready to make ijij jiji their move. However, he has some outstanding ijij :iji individuals, who have not been jinxed, and-we wish the iiii; jiji popular coach the best of luck. jiji We don't hear much from the swimmers. With only 8 & jiji members on the varsity, they have to overcome a lot of §i jiji obstacles to win a meet. Coach Mike Shanahan deserves a £: jiji lot better, and we hope that in the future more will come iiii jiji out for swimming. When I speak of the Rowdies, they are a group of loyal ijij jiji basketball fans, from both East and West campus. Mike & ji;i Lawler and Mike Bauml have got together some fans iiii jijj from East to respond with the West crew for a large vocal iiii iiii support for the Warriors. They are getting larger support 8 $ every game, and our goal is to fill the gym, both upper and iiii iiii lower for a game this season. The Johnsburg Old Timer Baseball Dinner will be held & iiii at the Community Club on Monday the 21st. It is an iiii! &i Annyal event, and is .worth while attending. & Vihce Lloyd will again be the M.C. He does a real good & - job, and tells some interesting behind the scenes stories. £:• uck Peden the P.R. man of the Cubs will be there'along S .. ith the finest relief pitcher in baseball Bruce Sutter. We & iiii Sox fans hope to have Roland Heymond, and I want to ask S iiij him why Bill Day and myself had to be in attendance on $ ijij the night they had the Disco Derby. They still owe us a $ iiii ticket for the second game, plus the misery erf getting out & ijij of a parking lot on 3lst street. You would think that a former football coach, Day ?• ijii would have enough sense not to attend such a game. We " ijij almost got mobbed getting out of the park. Also some Milwaukee Braves personnel are expected to & ijij be in Johnsburg. It is for a good cause, money left over after expenses go ijij: ijij to the Johnsburg high school, and I for sure, will be-in xi: £j attendance. Hope many of you1 are there on January 21. & The "Bad News Bears" will be here on February 9. For & iiij you Alumni that want to play in the opening game, contact & ijij Bill Blankenhorn at West campus, or me at 385-5182. We & iiii need your help. The Booster Club of McHenry High School & ijij needs your support. Thfey do a good job of helping the ijij ijj: Athletic Program, and it is their money making project of ijij: ijj; the year. The Bad News Bears have promised some i'-i*': ijij interesting personalities for this year's game. ijij In going down-Memory Lane we take you back to the & ijij 1962-63 season at East campus gym.
