! I - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 16.1980 \ P< wice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO tTaken from the files of January 23. 1930* Friends of Jacob F. Stock will be pleased to learn of his unusual and interesting workuin Chicago where he is now working in the Field Museum He is working in the Stanley Field Botanical Laboratories of the Field Museum on a group that it will take until 1933 to com plete. The subject is the formation of coal from trees and plant life; vegetation that sprouted 30 to 40 feet without branches, the leaves growing out of the trunk which is too soft and pulpy to support the weight of branches. Fossils are used to cohipare with the recon struction and will be the largest exhibit ever at tempted by the museum. The first big meeting of the year of the McHenrv Council. Knights o"f Columbus, is being planned by Grand Knight John Bolger and a very unique entertainment is in store for all those who can find their way clear to attend. Nothing much may be said about the attraction beforenand ex cept that it is a very modern invention that as yet has not been put on the market. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of January 25, 1940) "The Devil Wagon is a good name for the automobile. It is a dangerous plaything. More than 270 persons have been killed within the last year in automobile accidents." These words were printed in the McHenry Plaindealer just thirty years ago, January, 1910. The automobile may have been considered a plaything' at that time, but today it has become a necessity. Yes, it is still dangerous and thousands of people_are killed every year in automobile accidents.,, But wouldn't it be a strange world today without them? After, listening to a splendid talk by Roy J. Stewart, chairman of the board of supervisors, members of the McHenry Lions club beoame con vinced that - McHenry township has a problem that deserved earnest thought and deep consideration, the improvementjjf its roads. The subject of- unproved roads has been a matter of discussion for several years in this summer resort sec- . tion. New subdivisions have been opened up arid hun dreds of homes built, resulting in a mammoth increase in valuations. This rate may be extended for five years to proyide housing facilities for Special Education students, diagnostic service, sup portive services and ad ministration: Con4inued progress tbward assuring McHenr^ and surrounding com munities with the most modern health care will be reflected in a series of reports given at this year's annual meeting of the M c H e n r y H o s p i t a l association late this month. Franzen, Illinois Department of Corrections director, last week an nounced the release of 114 inmates from state prisons^ and 32 inmates from com-4 munity correctional centers. The action stems from a recent Illinois # Supreme Court decision which ruled the department was in error in interpreting the good conduct credit provisions of the Class X legislation, ef fective Feb. l", 1978. The department had maintained that individuals serving terms under the prior law were not entitled to receive these credits. Further releases are expected when t h e d e p a r t m e n t ' s recalculations of sentences are completed.
