Miller, has announced the latest figures which indicate that during the month of December, 163 persons died from injuries sustained from traffic accidents on Illinois streets and highways. State Police, District 2, which covers . Lake, McHerjry, DeKalb. Kane and DuPage counties, reports 273 persons have been killed in these counties since Jan. 1 of (his year. Three hundred and seventeen persons were also killed during the same period last year in these counties. The board of directors of the United Way of McHenry County has recently voted to help replenish the depleted disaster relief reserves of the American Red Cross. With a unanimous vote, the United Way of McHenry County agreed to forward $4,000 to the Red Cross as its contribution to a 15 million dollar nationwide fund drive that organization is presently conducting The nation's largest volunteer relief agency reported that it has already exhausted the amount budgeted for disasters this fiscal year, which runs from July 1, 1979, to June 30, 1980. The Red Cross said that there has been a total of 21 national disaster operations since July 1, 1979. Its funds were spent to provide shelter and food for 453,331 victims and emergency workers and assistance to 70,688 families. Red Cross help to individual families can include food, clothing, essential fur­ nishings, rent and health needs. Red Cross disaster services are aimed at meeting the emergency needs of victims and to p r o v i d e a d d i t i o n a l assistance to. individual families with "urgent and verified disaster-caused needs." v. Major reason for the financial crisis was placed on heavy relief expenditures to help hurricane and flood victims this past summer in this country, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, Approximately $13.4 million of the more than 23 million spent thus far by the Red cross were expended on operations to help victims of Hurricanes David and Frederic this past summer. In addition to these, two hurricanes, tropical storm Claudette was responsible for expenditures of over $2.6 million in Texas and Rgd Cross volunteers and staff also were busy helping victims of various floods in areas of California, Indiana, F l o r i d a , M a r y l a n d , Louisiana,' Virginia and Connecticut. Meanwhile, the United Way of McHenry County continues its campaign to raise funds to help support the programs of all its 19 different human service agencies.
