\ % Combatting The Cold There's truth in the old adage, "When your feet are cold, put on your hat." A large amount of body heat can dissipate from an uncovered head, says Kathi Heberer, !Home Economics Extension adviser. So she encourages people to wear a hat and several layers of clothing before venturing into winter weather. Wear caps made of water- repellent cloth With wool linings so snow doesn't collect on your head. Wet hats and wet clothes don't make warm winter wear. Put on several layers of thin clothing, rather than one heavy layer, Ms. Heberer says. Clothing that insulates the body keeps it comfortable and warm in cool rooms. Trapped, still air is excellent insulation. Clothing that traps a lot of air insulates the body best. If you will be out in the snow or sleet, wear an outer layer of water-repellent clothing, such as a raincoat. But if you're in the car, don't wear the water-repellent layer if it makes you per spire. Cover as much exposed skin as possible and keep your hands warm Jay olitting them under your ar/npits or between your thighs, Ms. Heberer continues. And remember, mittens .are warmer than gloves. If your feet perspire, change socks periodically and dry out the spare pair. «... Wear two or three pairs of lightweight socks rather than one heavy pair. But don't cut off circulation by overloading your boot with layers of socks. Ms, Heberer also says to avoid heavy trousers and wear more-. underwear in stead. The best materials for trousers are water-repellent wool, gabardine or poplin. Long underwear should be medium-weight, preferably part cotton and part wool. KNIGHTS IN ' BLACK ARMOR Over the years as a resident of Wonder Lake, I heard impressive comments about the men of our Fire Department. As a correspondent, I became even more aware of all they do when talking to auxiliary members about their news items. Between Christmas and New ye'afs, the Sowers family became personally involved when a small fire broke out beneath the fireplace. We thought the fire was extinguished, but decided we should call for the opinion of our nephew Rick' Berndt, who is a member of the department. He thought it wise to have the men come over and check it out. We were fortunate that they did, because the fire had traveled into a main supporting beam under the living-room. If they hadn't come, our whole house might have been up in flames in a short time/ The attention, care, and kindness received from all the men who arrived was heartwarming. Wonder Lake 'is very fortunate to haW such a group of dedicated men who volunteer their services to our community. SICK LIST Ray Sullivan paid a visit to - Memorial hospital Ne% Year's eve.
