Dawn Jaburek Earns Recycle For Garbage Shortage Perfect Grade Record Members of McHenry Junior high school Student Council and, faculty mem bers will be on hand Saturday, Jan. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. a the southeast corner of the McHenry Market Place to receive properly prepared material for recycling. Funds earned at the last drive in which McHenry Junior high par ticipated were used to purchase basketball back boards for the school. Not only does recycling help the groups working on the drive, but it saves space in landfills (which are qu ickly filling) and also saves natural resources by being able to reclaim material that would noramally end up in the solid waste stream. Through a survey made of the 17 drives carried on in McHenry county, it was determined that ap proximately 1,700 tons per year of usable material are saVed for future use for recycling. All citizens are urged to become a part of this growing practice. The following guidelines may be of help to those in terested in becoming in volved. Newspapers - tie securely into bundles easily handled by the workers (and the householder), or place securely into strong, brown paper bags. All plastic bags should be removed. Wet paper is not acceptable since the newspaper is processed dry immediately after unloading. Recycled baling twine is available for those who would like to take some, home with them. Magazines and corrugated board -- bundle separately from the newspaper. Glass bottles and jars - wash, and have metal and plastic removed. This0 in cludes the plastic jackets that are now found on some glass bottles. Clear, green and brown glass are ac cepted for recycling. Please do not bring light bulbs or crockery of any sort, and do not pre-crush glass. Paper labels may be left on the bottles All-steel ca°ns - rinse, remove labels, cut out bottoms (which makes flattening easier) and flatten to conserve space. Aluminum - separate from the all-steel cans since they are processed through different avenues. Some people still confuse the all- aluminum can with the bi metal can, which can not be recycled. All-aluminum cans usually have "all- aluminum" or "recyclable aluminum" printed"on them. If in doubt, use a magnet, for a magnet will not stick to the side of an all-aluminum can but will be attracted to the side of a bi-metal can and not to the top, which is the only aluminum portion. Used motor oil - deliver in a plastic jug with a secure lid. Certain soup labels are being collected at the drive for Pioneer Center for the Exceptional, which uses them toward purchase of equipment for their sheltered workshop. How tocopewith the high cost of heating: If you're frustrated by the high cost of heating, a Kero-Sun portable kerosene heater gives you low cost heat for only pennies an hour. Heats with almost 100% efficiency for 30 hours on less than 2 gallons of clean-burning, safe kerosene. Every Kero-Sun is thoroughly safety- tested. Each has a battery-powered igniter, so you need no matches to light it and each has an automatic shut-off -- in case of tip-over. There's no smoke, no odor, and you need no chimney installation. This may be the winter when a Kero-Sun portable heater is your only way to handle the high cost of heating. "THE HOUSE THAT SERVICE BUILT" Gtopgt P. Fitund, Inc. 4102 W.
