The McHenry sophomores lost a thriller to Crystal Lake by the score of 49 to 48. Johnsburg Skyhawks delighted fans with an easy win, 70-58, over South BelOit. McHenry high school girls' swimming team defeated Rockford Auburn 107 to 41. Waukegan West defeated McHenry 128 to 107 in the triangular affair. Junior Rivera, one of McHenry's top wrestlers this year, wrestled this way through four matches at the I.H.S.A. district tournament at .Mundelein and emerged a qualifier for the sectionals. Coach Gary Collins' Crystal Lake South "Gators" defeated the Warriors for the second time this season, 72 to 57. That win, with Crown's defeat at the hands of Jacobs, enabled the former Warrior coach to have his Gators in first place in the Fox Valley. With three games remaining the Johnsburg Skyhawks enter the home stretch in a close race with Marengo for the cham­ pionship of the Shark con­ ference. The Skyhawks defeated North Boone 59-£7 to boost their conference record to 7-2, only half a game away from the Marengo Indians. The Montini Mustangs eighth grade basketball team finished second in a field of sixteen schools in the eighth annual Lake Zurich winter classic. The Mustangs won the Fox Valley conference this year and finished first in the conference tournament. The Skyhawks won a one point victory over Harvard in overtime, 58-57. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD The Johnsburg varsity girls basketball team defeated North Boone 54-27 in a Shark conference game. Lora Jacobs scored 11 field goals to lead her team with 22 points. The McHenry girls' basketball team split a pair of games in the Fox Valley conference. They lost a heartbreaker to Dundee 46- 44 and then defeated Crystal Lake South 55 to 40. The Johnsburg Skyhawks defeated the Marengo In­ dians 61-58 in overtime for the championship of the Shark conference. The victory assured Johnsburg of first place in the Shark conference and unless the Skyhawks are upset as they host North Boone the championship will belong to them exclusively. The Johnsburg Skyhawks defeated the North Boone Vikings 71-67 to become the 1979 champions of the Shark conference. The Skyhawks closed the regular season schedule with a 19-5 overall and 10-2 conference record. It was the first conference championship for the first year school and it was also the most successful won-loss record in McHenry county during regular season ac­ tion. The McHenry high boys' swimming team opened its 1979 season with two vic­ tories. They defeated Rolling Meadows 92 to 78 and beat Dundee 111 to 54. Before a Parents' night gathering, the McHenry High Warriors scored their highest total of the season as they romped over Cary Grove 80 to 64. The Johnsburg Skyhawks coasted to an easy 82-70 win over Ida Crown of Chicago in the first game of the Har­ vard Regional tournament. MARCH The Marian Hurricanes stormed the Harvard regional and almost sank Johnsburg's hopes for a berth in the championship game. But tile Skyhawk club of Johnsburg managed to weather the Hurricane assault 74-61 and advance to the final port in regional competition. Making only 7 of 21 free throw attempts, the McHenry high girls basketball team went down to a 52 to 51 defeat at the hands of Woodstock. Johnsburg defeated the Harvard Hornets 62-48 to win the regional crown and a trip to the Oregon sectional where the Skyhawks will meet Marengo. It was the third championship the 1978- 79 Skyhawks have won to date. Tim Zeller.son of Mr. and .Mrs. Ken Zeller, was selected by the coaches to the Fox Valley's All Con­ ference team. Zeller, a senior forward, was the spark plug of the Warriors the past season. The Montini Mustang basketball team was crown­ ed the champions of the Rockford Diocesan grade school tournament of 1979. The Montini victories mark the first Rockford diocesan championship in the history of the school. Records in­ dicate that the last Catholic school from McHenry to claim the diocesan crown was approximately 20 years ago. The McHenry high Warriors finished the regular season in fine style as they defeated Crystal Lake Central in the Tiger fieldhouse 72 to 54. Johnsburg Skyhawks scalped the Marengo In­ dians. Don Bentz, a senior, scored 30 points to lead the march to the sectional final. The McHenry high Warriors closed out their season with an overtime loss to Hononegah of Rockton, 64 to 60 in the Belvidere regional tournament. With starters, Tim Zeller and Len Jensen, both on the bench in the middle of the final period due to fouling out, the Warriors staged a rally and Bobby Zeller's twenty-footer with 21 seconds remaining, put the Warriors in Over­ time. Freshman Dirk Andreas, a graduate of Marian Central last year, is on the varsity baseball squad roster M Carthage college for the 1979 season. Andreas is listed on the roster as an outfielder, Johnsburg's dream season came to an end with a 74-50 loss to Oregon in the finals of thfe Class A sectional tour­ nament in Oregon. The Skyhawks finished with a 23- 6 record, a remarkable achievement, considering the fact the school is in its first year of existence.
