The girls bowed out of tournament play when they lost to Woodstock 50 to 45 in the finals of the regional. Tim Zeller, senior forward of the McHenry Warriors, was named Mr. Basketball at the awards dinner. Tim was also named Most Valuable player of the squad. Junior Barry An derson was named the most improved player for the season. S.I.H. returned to McHenry from Sarasota where he helped Bill Veeck with the White Sox. He en joyed seeing Chuck Hiller, Ken Espey and former high school basketball coach, Gordon Stringer, while in the sunshine state. Valley Ten conference this year with an undefeated 10-0 record. The team went on to win the league tournament at the end of the season. The girls finished 13-0 record. Don Bentz, Scott Dixon and Coach Bob Kies headed the list of Johnsburg Skyhawks to grab all- conference honors. Bentz was named most valuable player in the conference and was joined on the first team by senior guard and captain Dixon. Bob Kies was named coach of the year for the fourth time. Sharon Smith, a senior of Pam Shaffer's McHenry high basketball team, was selected by the league coaches to the conference team. Sharon wound up the season scoring 219 points in the Fox Valley, to finish seventh in the conference in scoring. , The most valuable varsity wrestler award went to senior Junior Rivera, ending his four-year career with a 17-23-4 varsity record and 13- 12-4 season record. Mark Betancourt was voted the most valuable junior varsity wrestler, while Scott Schmitt received the freshman award. For the first time in the history of girls' basketball at McHenry high school, the Warriors have a chance 1o win the regional' cham pionship. the local girls The Johnsburg varsity boys' baseball squad lost both games of a double header against Grayslake, 10-2 and 2-0. The McHenry girls' track team ran away from the first year Johnsburg Skyhawks, winning every event but two to win easily 80-26. The McHenry high tennis squad came through the doubles competition to Capture a tie for first place in the Quad held on the local courts. The McHenry high track team finished eighth out of ten schools in the Fox Valley relays held in Oswego. The Warriors' 10 points were scored by senior hurdler Chris Nowell. The McHenry Warrior girls' I rack team, paced by ihree first place finishes by Carrie Mortell, finshed second in a triangular meet at McCracken field. With a time of 1:56.8 the McHenry girls' track learn set a new record in the 880 Medley Relay at the county meet at Woodstock. Tom Les, eighth grade basketball coach at Montini junior high, has been selected District 6 Junior High Coach of the Year by the Illinois Basketball Coaches association. It is the second striaght year Les has won the award. In a game'played before APR11, Senior Sharon Smith and junior Sue Hutchinson shared the MVP award for girls' basketball this past season at McHenry high school. Junior Chris Connell was selected as the most improved player. The girls Finished fifth in the Fox Valley and went to the regional finals before bowing to Woodstock.
