This group of young students participated In a contest to design a cover for their Catholic Schools week booklet. The booklet itself is comprised of articles and poems written by the primary center students to express their thoughts about the importance of their families and school. Chase, pioneer trail-blazer and the last of McHenry's Civil war veterans, celebrated his 101st birthday at his home in Ringwood. Although he is in very frail health, Mr. Chase takes a great interest in the affairs of the day and spent a very pleasant anniversary at his comfortable home, where he received the congratulations of his many friends in calls aftd cards of good wishes. His birthday was also announced over the radio station, W.L.S. A meeting of Democrats was held in the Forester hall in McHenry. A slate was made up for candidates for the offices to be chosen at the primaries, April 8, as follows: For county clerk, Alex M. Adams, McHenry; for sheriff, Frank Lazansky, Cary; for treasurer, Mark T. Sullivan, Harvard; for representative, Thomas A. Bolger, McHenry. The Daughters of the G.A.R. presented the kin dergarten with a beautiful American flag. The occasion was made even more im pressive coming as it did on Lincoln's birthday. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 15, 1940) President Roosevelt declared in a proclamation that every person over 18 years old had a duty to an swer all questions of the forthcoming census, and he gave assurance that the information they furnished would be kept confidential. The sixteenth decennial census will begin April 1. A resolution was approved by the County board asking the state Highway depart ment to pave a two-mile stretch of road south of Pistakee Bay which would connect Routes 31 and 59. This road would connect McHenry and Lake counties by cement. The stretch in question is. a span between the two routes mentioned and would cost some $50,000. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of February 10, 1955 K Construction of a new bridge on South Green street seems to be near, according to reports from the City Council. The Council ap proved the lowest bid as submitted by McHenry Sand and Gravel company, subject to state and county approval. According to the state law, the actual award could not be made since a waiting period of one week is required between the time bids are received and the time of award of contract. The need for the new bridge has been recognized for some lime and has been more urgent since the erection of Edgebrook school. Northern Illinois Gas company has announced that its share of the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America's proposed $10,700,000 boost in its wholesale cost of gas to be effective March 2 will in: crease the bills of bi-monthly residential customers about six cents a month, and gas heat customers ap proximately 40 cents PAGE II -PI.AINDEAJ.KR- monthly beginning with bills issued in May. Subject to the consent of the Illinois Commerce commission, the increase to the utility's 475,000 customers will be about 3.7 percent. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of February 13, 1970) A letter of resignation was read from Rev. John Mclntyre in which he told of his decision to resign from the board of Consolidated School District 15. He said a combination of reasons FRIDAY. FEBRUARY 8.1*0 prompted his decision. His term of office would have ended this spring. The Student Government at McHenry County college, organized for the second semester, is represented by John Havlik, Ray Marks and Ed Saunders of McHenry. The low bid of $456,570 submitted by William Tonyan & Sons, Inc.,, of McHenry, was accepted by the board of supervisors for construction of a new ad dition to the Valley Hi Nursing home at flartland.
