To Your Health A Service of McHenry Hospital By Marion Olsen Health Reporter In the early 1900's people thought of hospitals as places where you die. Later, they were labelled "places for sick people." In the year 2,000, or earlier, people may be going to the hospital in order to stay well. The American Hospital association reports about '•Wellness" programs aimed at using hospitals as resources for staying well. Defining wellness as "enhancing the quality of a person's life through ac tivities designed to improve the state of his present physical, mental and spiritual well being," the emphasis is on freedom of choice. A person, young or old, with or without chronic heailth problems or han dicaps, can choose the way to "attain his maximum attainable (health) poten tial." Wellness programs stress four major areas of life: nutrition, physical fitness, stress management and the environment in which the individual lives. The best candidate for educating for wellness, they say, is a hospitalized patient just after surgery or recovering from a major illness. Recognizing this some years ago, McHenry hospital established in patient education programs on diabetes, weight control, nutrition and the management of ostomies, stroke and heart problems. C u r r e n t l y , o u t r e a c h programs are offered by the hospital including "I Quit Smoking" clinics, diabetes testing 'and blood pressure screening. However, the AHA reports that University hospital in Augusta, Ga., has in corporated such efforts under one roof, called "Health Central", devoted entirely to the wellness c o n c e p t . H o u s i n g classrooms, a library kit chen, exercise room and an indoor track, the building is staffed by a nutritionist, physiologist and health educators. They conduct courses in weight control, nutrition, smoking cessation and lifestyle education. Rosa Messer, R.N., coordinator of Health Central'says, "Wellness is positive... it's about feeling good about yourself." Cost limits community hospitals to offering wellness programs in smaller doses, but watch for this concept as a prescription for the future. An increasing number of families and organizations are becoming involved in what should some day become a way of life for all citizens-making the con servation of natural resources a part of the conscious, daily experience. Research has shown that it takes only a few minutes a week to prepare materials for recycling rather than just throwing these same materials into the trash can. By saving these materials and either calling for pick-up or taking them to the McHenry Market Place on the third Saturday of every month, resources can be saved and the groups working on the drive will benefit financially from your actions. The McHenry County Defenders and all the groups working on the drives en courage everyone to join in the recycling habit. Newspaper, corrugated board, magazines; clear, green and brown glass bottles; all-steel cans, all- aluminum products and used motor oil are all collected at the drives.
