PLAINDEALER . WEDNESDAY. »ARCII Warriors Edged 51 To 49 By Big Belvidere Five In Regional Game By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry High Warriors bowed out of regional play when they lost to Belvidere at Woodstock on Friday night by the score of 51 to 49. The Bucs connected on 5 of 6 free throws in the closing seconds to notch the win over the Warriors. The Bucs using their superior height, and a tough 1-2-2 zone forced the Warriors to shoot from the outside most of the evening, and the ball just wouldn't drop, and as a result. Belivdere will travel to Rockford next week, while the Warriors will wait until next year. In the opening period both teams had tournament jitters, as each team com mitted four turnovers, and numerous missed shots. Bob Zeller. playing his finest game as a Warrior, was the whole Warrior offense in the opening eight minutes as he made the only two baskets, as «q Warriors and Bucs tied 4 apiece at the end of the period. The well disciplined Bucs controlled the tempo of the game, not only in the opening period. but throughout the contest, as they refused to run and gun' with the Warriors, forcing them into a ball control game. In the second period Zeller continued his scoring as he made the Warrior's first two baskets giving them a 8 to 6 lead. At the 4:30 mark Jensen's 12 footer gave the Warrior*, their biggest lead of the night, 12 to 8. and after Zeller again muscled his way for another hoop at 2:30. the Warriors led 16 to 13. Then as in past games the Warriors hit a cold spell, and the Bucs began to get the easy shot, and crept ahead to a 21 to 18 halftime margin. In the third period the Warriors hung right in there, with Jensen taking over the scoring, and with 1:15 left Johnson's basket tied it at 33 all- The Bucs came back down the floor and Durley hit a 10 footer to put them ahead 35 to 33. The final period was a spectator's delight. Both teams played excellent basketball. The Warriors crept to within one, and when Len Jensen stole a ball and went in for a solo basket, that would have given the Warriors the lead, it was nullified by *a traveling penalty, that brought a disgusted Warrior crowd to its feet. Trailing by three, the Warriors were forced to foul in order to obtain possession, but the Bucs met the challenge, and calmly made 5 of 6. Tony Sroka's basket at the buzzer narrowed the gap to the final 51 to 49 victory for Belvidere. Coach Ludwig had nothing but high praise for his Warrior crew. He said, "we played well, but just couldn't hit the basket". It was a fine game, turnovers were few for a championship game, fouls were a rarety, the Warriors committing 13, the Bucs 11. Both teams played excellent defense, but the superior height of the Bucs payed off in the long run. Again as always in the season, the Warrior crowd was large. If the tourney was a financial success, the Woodstock management must give a vote of thanks to the Warrior delegation. They really love our Warriors. Last week we suggested that the Cubs trade Bruce Sutter to the Yankees. They would take over that $700,000 salary for 1980 and send a pack of players to the Cubs. Now comes Joe Wagner to agree with the idea. He is one of the Cub fans who are disenchanted with Sutter's attitude. Right or wrong. Sutter wants a five year contract. In the meantime, we can frown on his disappointment, then laugh all the way to the bank. A Cub fan agreeing with S.I.H. may be historical. It is recorded here since it may never happen again. •SPORTS EDITOR- I like to hear good singing. What throws me is the strained expressions on those who blast away to see how much noise they can make They are strained and -- I am pained. As we entered the Longhorn. A1 Jourdan (a White Soxer) and George Thompson (the other kind) were leaving. A1 mentioned that our Sox haven't lost a game this season. I'm sure George had something kind to say. I didn't wait. Have been waiting for a call saying the first robin of the spring had landed. No robins, but Mae Collis of the Ray and Mae team on Hanly Street reports that their jonquils are peaking through. No sign of spring in our yard, but wait a while. Those beautiful dandelions never fail. The Clarence J. Smiths write from Bonita Springs, Florida and I am going to share their interesting letters with you. Clarence is a real sports fan. Here is what he has to say. Dear Earl: Baseball season is around again. Teams are in training. Seems like there might be a baseball strike again. All that the players are in terested in is money nowadays. They aren t dedicated ball players lilce they used to be. Actually they aren't good players, such as Gaby Hartnett. Hack Wilson, Luke Appling, Lou Gehrig. Babe Ruth, etc. Had dinner With Gus Freund in a local restaurant and neither of us will be in shape to open up the season, as we do too much training in restaurants. Reminiscing our own playing days, we cut the grass and raked the fields during the week, so we could play on Sundays. My last game was played in Sept., 1934 against Bismarch Brewers from Chicago. This was 12" fast ball pitching under lights, if you recall. I played for McHenry, 3rd base. Had played with players Huppy •" Smith. Harold Freund, Pickles Bohr, Gus Freund, Joe Schmitt, Jimmy Fay, Howie Phlug. We had won the County Championship. \»r< a. *** if y n » » Celebrate St. Patrick's Day at CHAPEL HILL SATURDAY. Smith Clarence s wife, Lucille, sends this serious report, telling us that if it wasn't for her husband's alertness, she wouldn't be around to write. It is a beautiful and touching report that needs no further comment from me. Read this -- and think: FAST THINKING Recently we were having a nice lunch with some friends at a local restaurant, when a portion of food lodged in my throat, and I began to choke. I managed to get the words, "I'm chokingout and tapped my husband, who is blind, on the arm. He immediately got up from his chair, slapped me on the back as did my lady friend, but that didn't help. So my husband grabbed me just below the rib cage and gave me a good punch That dislodged the food im mediately. and I was fine. Our waiter was most kind also, he asked if I was all right, and I told him I was fine. What I am trying to say is that blind people, as Well as many handicapped, are very useful if they are given a chance to do so. I wish the public would realize this and treat them like normal people instead of treating them like they should be sitting in a corner so no one would see them. Let's give the handicapped a chance to live good lives. H. Lucille Smith Bonita Springs Glenn Draper, who wat ches more basketball than anybody (cable TV), told us DePaul would lose. AIR DELIVERY-Taking the high route, Barry Anderson catches his opponent, Mike Rhode of Belvidere by surprise as he prepares to drop in this two-pointer in the championship game of the regional held at Woodstock. But, Rhode, one of four double digit scorers for Belvidere hit for io points as they eliminated McHenry from the tournament 51-49. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Nobody told us our Warriors would lose that close game to Belvidere in the regional. Wouldn't have believed them if they had. Coach Ludwig and his team gave us some thrilling games, a speedy team that was fun to watch. -SO THEY SAY - - What have you done for me lately? They will all be there when the will is read. It isn't the money -- It's the principle of the thing. (Nine times out of ten, it is the money.) Talking too much is bad. Talking out of turn is worse. Fool me once. Shame on you. Fool me twice. Shame on me. --And "when" I am elected -- If you have two strikes on you, keep your eyes open. If you plant thistles, don't go barefoot. I don't want to say anthing about him (or her), but' -- Don't point, mister, but where is it? (Go to the end of the hall and turn right.) Go ahead and eat it. It is fat free. OK. Just one for the road. Did you ever see such big I's? That's good enough. (Grandma used to say, "Good enough is good for nothing") I only read PLAYBOY for the fine articles. My husband wouldn't do anything like that. He's too fine, too noble -- too old. She keeps talking when I am interrupting. If I had your money, I would throw mine away. After a night on the town -- "It must have been something I ate". McHenry Recreation Tuesday 7 p.m. Ladies League 3-4-80 Over Average: McHenry Floral: L. Stine, 420; L. Homo, 5-8-10 Split; L. Position bowl saw a few changes and for some it was a good move and for others, not so good, but everyone had the usual good time. Next week is Fun Bowl (or maybe Funny Bowl) followed by a season's end buffet which all will enjoy. Speaking of eating, J.K.L.'s won the team pizza for the 6th time and we close with three teams still to taste that delectable treat. High games were rolled by S. Blume, 205; T. Miller, 203; A. Boeldt, 199; B. Thompson, 192; and G. Lofgren, 190. Only two qualified for high series and they were A. Boeldt with a 520 and B Thompson with a 502. Wonder what a 500 series feels like? Splits were in order this week with L. Schoen (the gourmet "eater-outer") getting the 6-7; L. Homo getting the 4-10; S. Blume (twice in one article?) taking care of the 5-10; and G. Lofgren wiping off the 3-7- 10.
