Corn Farmers Reject Marketing Program Illinois corn farmers have rejected establishment of a corn marketing program that would have raised more than a million dolalrs an nually to establish new corn markets, and find new uses for corn. More than 20.000 farmers casting ballots in the referendum voted better than 2 to 1 against the proposal. Unofficial tally put yea votes at about 6,300 and no votes at about 13,800. The measure gained ap proval by farmers in only two of the states's 15 corn marketing districts that were drawn up under the proposal. One was the northern Illinois district made up of the counties of DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, Cook, Boone and Will. Other district favoring the proposal was a southwestern Illinois district made up of the counties of Bond, Clin ton, Madison, Monroe, St. Clair and Washington. Had the referendum been approved, farmers would have donated a quarter-cent per bushel of grain sold in a statewide fund that would have been used for research and market promotion. The fund would have been ad ministered by a 15-member farmer board. Soybean farmers have approved a checkoff program and are currently operating a successful reasearch and market ex pansion program.
