As the great outdoors reembellishes itself following the ravages of winter, home owners get the urge to set things right in the great outdoors. Many spring refurbishers like to start at the top--by putting up new ceiling tiles orlay-in panels. Tiles are 12-inch squares cemented or stapled to the old ceiling; panels are 2' x 4' oblongs supported by a grid. Ceiling tiles and panels are tried-and-true problem-solvers. They cover cracked plaster and exposed joists, lower too-high ceilings, add pattern to plain dry wall. • Choosing the right ceiling for a given household project is easy. FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 1980 mation prior to visiting the store. > Here are some answers from Armstrong to questions fre quently asked about the ceilings it manufactures: • Q: Can I cement my new ceiling tiles to any surface? • A: Yes, any reasonably smooth surface that is structur ally sound and cleaned free of dirt and grease. • Q: What about cementing new ceiling tiles directly over old tiles? • A: It's best to remove old tiles first to ensure an adequate hold. • Q: What tools are needed to install lay-in panels (sus pended ceiling)? • A: The job can be done us ing these common household . tools: chalk line, measuring rule, hammer and nails, metal snips, pliers, two-foot or four- foot carpenter's level, string and utility knife. • Q: Will tile or panel ceil ings insulate my room? • A: Rarely will ceilings do a good job of insulating. Almost all glass fiber, mineral fiber and wood fiber ceilings have mini mal insulation value. If you want to insulate the area over head, do it the right way--with building insulation. And don't insulate overhead when the room above is also heated. • Q: Can I put ceiling tiles in the bathroom? • A: Yes, if the bathroom has a window or is vented to the out side with a fan. • Q: Can I install a new ceil ing over an embedded radiant- heated coil ceiling? • A: No. You will suffer an appreciable loss of heating effi ciency, and the new ceiling will not remain stable. • Q: What's the minimum distance my new suspended ceiling has to be lowered from the existing ceiling? • A: A minimum of three inches is required. If fluorescent SUSPENDED CEILINGS, such as this "Bennington" model from Armstrong, can be installed as little as three inches below the existing ceiling. If fluorescent light fixtures are incorpo rated, a drop of five to six inches is all that's needed. light fixtures are incorporated, a drop of five to six inches is nec essary. • Q: If I add fluorescent lights to my suspended ceiling, how many fixtures will I need? • A: The standard rule is that for every 75 square feet of ceil ing area, you need two 4-foot fluorescent tubes. • Q: Should tiles or panels become .slightly soiled over time, how can they be cleaned? • A: A special coating en ables them to be washed with a sponge soaked in a solution of warm water and mild detergent. • Q: Can tiles or panels be painted? _ • A: Yes, if desired. Be sure to clean them first, to remove dust and loose dirt. Marks, scratches and gouges should be repaired with filler. Apply a wa ter-based paint.
