Springfield, „ 111. 02706) Abraham Lincoln, U.S. Grant, and tornadoes were the principal news subjects in Illinois papers during April. 1880. Neither his birthday nor any other event in his life had received more than a two or three line mention in the newspapers since Lin coln's funeral. But on his .birthday in 1880 the Lincoln Guard of Honor had been formed and one of its pur poses was "to conduct memorial services on ap propriate occasions." The first of these "appropriate occasions" came on April 15, the 15th anniversary of his death. A memorial service was held "at the catacomb of the National Lincoln monum- net" (now known as the Lincoln Tomb) in Springfield's Oak Ridge cemetery. The "program ... began promptly at 7:22 a.m., the time of the president's death at Washington. About 300 persons were present, notwithstanding the early & hour and uncomfortable atmosphere," according to the Chicago Inter Ocean. The service opened with a prayer, closed with a benediction, and included several hvmns sung by the Y.M.C.A. Quintette club. There were addresses by the Rev. William B. Affleck of York, England, and Gov. Shelby M. Cullom, and readings of Lincoln's Farewell to Springfield speech, his Second Inaugural address, and his "famous letter to Mrs. Eliza P. Gurney, written in Sep tember, 1864." Mrs. Gurney was the widow of a well known Quaker leader and in the letter Lincoln expressed some of his religious beliefs. While this Lincoln memorial service was well covered by the newspapers it did not receive nearly the space devoted to former President Ulysses S. Grant's return to Illinois from New Orleans, according to a check of the newspaper files of a hundred years ago in the Illinois State Historical library. Grant-who since early January, had traveled through the southeast coast states, then to Cuba and over to Mexico City and back to Texas-was on his way home to Galena. He was met at iMew ui leana in late af ternoon March 31 by a parade and a crowd estimated at 75,000. As the procession passed down Rampart St., the Inter Ocean reported that "It was repeated frequently by citizens that never, even during the balmiest days of Mardi Gras was there such a crowd seen on the street as on this occasion." Grant reviewed the parade from the balcony of the St. Charles hotel and then went to the home of a cousin of his wife's for his stay in the city. His party left New Orleans April 11 and arrived at Cairo on the afternoon of April 16, after stops at Jackson and Vicksburg, Miss., and Little Rock, Ark. He was greeted at Cairo by a "multitude of six or eight thousand people," according to the Daily Cairo Bulletin. "Your little city," as Grant called Cairo, provided a reception with several speeches of welcome, a - fireworks display, a "feast fit for the gods," and a ball that lasted until after midnight. The Grant party's special train left at 10 a.m. on April 17 with handshaking stops at Villa Ridge, Ullin, Dongola, Cobden, Makanda, DuQuoin, and other stations along the route. The wreck at Elkville of a Cairo excursion train delayed the noon reception at Centralia until about 4 p.m Stops were made at Vandalia, Pana, and Decatur before the train reached. Bloomington at 11 p.m. for more speeches and a supper. Grant spent the next day (Sunday) in Bloomington and left on Monday morning for Galena. At many stops on this long trip Grant had been in troduced as "our next President," and a campaign headquarters had been opened in the Palmer House in Chicago. An enthusiastic overflow mass meeting was held at the Central Music hall on April 15, with Robert Todd Lincoln as the prin cipal speaker. April, 1880 was a month of killer tornadoes, floods, and changing weather for Illinois. On April 18 a tor nado caused severe damage in the Ottawa-LaSalle area and a week later another more severe hit the southern part of the state, resulting in a dozen or more people killed, houses and barns blown to splinters, and livestock and orchards scattered over the coun tryside. Balances Of General Funds Top Last Year f For seven of the last nine months, the month-end balances in the state's General funds have remained above the half- billion dollar mark, Comp troller Roland W. Burris reported this week. Burris said that the available balance in the General funds March 31, was $514 million. That is $131 million higher than the same date one year ago. Burris said that the new Corporate Personal Property Replacement tax has given thrust to the state's revenue gains but he noted, for example, ihat even though $130 million of the current balance will be earmarked for transfer to the Replacement fund in April, it will not affect the state's half-billion dollar footing because another $130 million is sitting in the Debt Service and Special funds and can be converted to General Revenue at any time. Along with the strong growth in revenue v Burris reported spending from the General funds has ac celerated. He said that total expenditures (from the General funds) in the first nine months of FY 1980 were $5,569 billion, which is $741 million or 15.3 percent higher than the same period last year. At the same time, General funds .revenues totaled $5,693 billion, which is $568 million or 11.1 percent higher than last year, but still $124 million greater than spending for this year. On The Move The healthy human eye is never really still, even when a person stares at a small object as carefully as possible. Micro scopic movements of the eye up, down, and from side to side constantly shift the direc- tion of gaze. Association Changes Date The regular meeting of the Lakeland Park, Property Owners association will be tomorrow, April 17, at 8 p.m. in the community house. Please note that this isn't the time of the month for this meeting. The annual general meeting was held in its place the first Thursday this month. The association has grown some since I mentioned they were looking for new members. If you haven't joined yet, you may do so by calling Anne Moore at 385- 5430. REGISTRATION The Lakeland Park Little League held registration April 12 and 13. If you weren't able to make it on one of those days, you can call 344-3494 after 6 p.m. to register your boy or girl. His mother, Cheryle, and Jim Nystrom took him, sister Debbie and brother Tommy to the museum of Science and Industry on Friday. Billy's favorite exhibit was the submarine. The family spent his birthday quietly relaxing from their long day at the museum. His favorite, chocolate cake and ice cream was the high point of the day. FAMILY EASTER The Cominsky family had a very nice Easter this year. Lisa and Jami were up at the crack of dawn looking for their eggs and baskets. Mike stayed in bed because he says he doesn't believe in the Easter bunny. Since our family is growing and my dining room isn't, we didn't all have dinner together. Grandpa and Grandma Cserep took Great Grandma Agnes Frere and Aunt Sue and Uncle Jeff Jordan out for brunch. They came over in the afternoon to visit. Aunt Cathy and Uncle John Koscher came for dinner with their children, APRIL 17,18,19 & 20 CARPETS & AREA RUGS NtofctaA. WHIMS ('115)3311000 M3VMa< )EI|M. SHOW MUST GO ON I guess I'm a true 'Brenda Starr'. I managed to write the news even though I smashed my right hand in the sliding glass door yesterday, and I'm right- handed. Someone neglected to tell me the door was fixed after many months of it dragging. It now closes with great ease. With gratitude to Karen, for having the courage to poke the hole in my fingernail to relieve the pressure. I still think the person responsible for fixing the door should have been the one to do it.
