Don't Miss Our Special Order Showing of the Johnny Corson Suits Wed., April 23, 12-7 3902 W. MAIN ST. McHENRY We couldn't have had better seats ynless Mary Frances Veeck had invited us into her booth. She probably didn't know we were a-comin'. The Sox had a bad first inning and couldn't catch up, going down to defeat 5 to 3. A Sox win would have been nice, but a ball game is a ball game to one who loves the game. Young Steve Trout deserved better fate for his pitching efforts, but the Sox defense looked like they were playing their second team. Alan Bannister was a pleasant surprise at third base, besides getting three hits. He has to be in that lineup. Oriole batters were slick at calling time out just as the pitcher was ready to throw and got away with it. A pitcher should let 'er fly for a no-pitch call rather than chance getting a kink in his arm with a sudden stop. With changes in the lineup, the Sox have won three games against those same Orioles. The boo-birds got Claudell Washington out of the lineup after the first game. He was a bust in the field and at the bat after Fred worked on the new- old bridge crossing Fox River at Elm St. (Rte. 120) back in the 20's* Think the bridge was completed in 1927. He recalled the time when the McHenry fire truck struck the guard rail of the old iron bridge and tipped equipment into the river. Bill and Carl Bickler were in jured in that mishap. Somebody with a horse and buggy pulled onto the bridge and there wasn't room to meet. Here's that man again! "Biff" Meyer doesn't miss a thing in the Plaindealer - cover to cover. He read an item in Twice Told Tales about Gus Freund's 1938 LaFayette being stolen in front of Billy Green's house on Court Street and not being recovered. Here's what the man says: Dear Earl: I certainly hope they can recover this car soon. It should bring a good price in todays market. There are not too many of this species left today. Maybe Ed Kelter's Ford coupe might have been of that vintage! Dear "Biff": Those two classics which you mention are on the most wanted list. All museums are being checked. Yours, S.I.H. ' The nice lady must also have known it was no day for old boys to take a chance on arthritis. So I put 'em on and was mighty glad since the weatherman's promise of sunshine was a poor guess. With Walter Staseyk (must check that spelling), an excellent driver at the controls, we wheeled into Comiskey Park for the in vasion of the Baltimore Orioles. electing to pull out of camp the last ten days. In the Saturday game, Squires showed he knows how to lay down a bunt, running his right hand up on the bat and pushing the ball. Guess most batters were afraid of their knuckles. In the long ago, the late John Fay used to teach local players the fine art of bunting -- just the way Squires lays 'em down. John had three sons, Walter, John and Jim, who were good athletes in these parts. Fred Beinapfl phoned after reading our comments about the John R. Knox Ford Garage. He remembers well.
