Relocate Remains Of 627 Civil War Vets Two years after the end of the Civil war, a small national cemetery was established in the town.of Grafton, W. Va., for 1,261 soldiers. They had been buried in nearby battlefield cemeteries and were rein- terred there. Almost half of them were "known but to God." Now, more than a century later, those 627 will be moved again, this time so that veterans of today can be buried at Grafton, the small national cemetery which has been closed for 19 years for lack of space. At the urging of com munity leaders, the West Virginia congressional delegation and Gov. Jay Rockefeller, Va., will relocate the remains of the 627 unknown soldiers in a large single grave, suitably and prominently marked as a permanent memorial to them. VA Chief Memorial Affairs Director Carl T. Noll said the relocation of the unknowns will make available the equivalent of one acre of land for burial, almost a third of the total area of the Grafton cemetery. Noll said the agency is Reviewing the possibility of adopting similar policies at a number of other national cemeteries. They must contain a sufficiently large number of graves of "unknown" servicemen that consolidation of their graves would provide a "reasonably significant" number of gravesites to meet today's needs. Under such a program, he said, , "thousands of gravesites could be made available for veterans who otherwise would be denied the privilege and honor of burial in a national cemetery." No determination has yet been made of which national cemeteries would be af fected by this program, Noll said. Currently, gravesites are available in ony 55 of the 109 national cemeteries operated by the Veterans Administration. Eventually I saw you coming out of a saloon last night late.
