PAGE 12 - PLAINDEALER • WEDNESDAY. APRIL ». 1960 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 1, 1930) While at work on his farm on April 25, Frank J. Kaiser found meteorgraph No. 567, which was sent out by the Weather bureau at the United States Department of Agriculture at Davenport, Iowa, and which was released on Jan 7, 1930. The affair was a rubber balloon about 7 feet high with a small basket attached at the bottom, which contained small, delipate instruments. The meteorgraph was returned to the department at Davenport as was requested and Mr. Kaiser is hoping for a reply from them concerning their findings. Eli Chase, the last of the Civil War veterans of the McHenry post, passed away at his home in Ringwood April 29, with the unjtisual record of having luuftl 101 years, the greater part of which was spent in Ringwood. Mr. Chase descended from Puritan English stock, his remote ancestors coming from England in early Colonial days. His grandfather, Stephen Chase, was a soldier in the Revolutionary war and took an active part in the battle of Bunker Hill. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 25, 1940) The intersection of Routes 31 and 20 might well be called a haven for tourists whose cars have thirsty gas tanks. Paul H. Schwerman has completed the picture by erecting a new Shell station on the southern point and now there is a service station on each of the three corners. The filling statiorf was erecte<d largely to remove the tanks from the front yard of the Schwerman garage which is located a few steps west on Route 31. Fifteen women and 21 men were selected for the May petit jury which will report for duty on May 27. Anton J. Schmitt, Anna Frisby, John F. Weber and Mabel Collins were named from McHenry. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of April 28, 1955) Northern Illinois Gas company began installing approximately 5,700* feet of new distribution mains here recently to provide ad ditional capacity for the increasing demands for natural gas in the local area. The installation of the new four-inch mains is a part of the company's 1955 local system reinforcement program. It included laying four-inch pipe at Crystal Lake road south from the end of the six-inch pipe in- Stalled last year at WaUkegan road and the installation of a four-inch main at Fox, Lake, Conway and Ann streets north and south of Waukegan road. The McHenry township Kiwanis club honored 12 outstanding students of McHenry area schools. The honored guests were Bette Miller and Daniel Baldino from St. Patrick's; Charlene Freund and Ronald Smith, St. John's school; Cynthia Rourke and George Kawell of the junior high school; Rosemary Mercure, and Richard Herdrich of St. Mary's school; Judy Koch and Robert Cezich of Harrison school; Virginia Carr and Wesley Bruce of Ringwood. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 29,, 1970) Members of the McHenry County college board decided to postpone the next bond referendum from June 13 to the earliest date possible after the public has been more fully informed on several phases of the program. The cuftain at West campus high school auditorium will rise on the t w e n t y - n i n t h s p r i n g program presented by McHenry Choral club. Again this year, the singers have chosen a varied program to please everyone. With semester exams completed, Miss Lynn Krebs of McHenry has once more settled into the intensive study of French on her second trip to Switzerland. The first year of study abroad, she spent with a Swiss family following her graduation from McHenry high school. This time she is one of 40 students who sailed last September from the Rosary college foreign study program" in Switzerland. Cite Post Commanders The annual dinner honoring' past county commanders of the McHenry County council, American Legion, will be held Saturday, April 26, at the Woodstock v F W. clubhouse. Dinner at 7:30 will follow a cocktail hour. Guest speaker for the evening will be Eugiie P. Set Route For New Hope Run The route for the Jaycees 6.2 mile (10kilometer) run to benefit Camp New Hope has been announced. The race will begin Sunday, May 4, at 8 a.m. from the West campus high school parking lot.
