Please call his Foster Home mom at 815-459-3946. by Mary Nelson On February 23, a poll was taken by Helping Paws to ascertain how successful HP has been and how informed the general public has become. The questions were asked: at random of 104 people and the results offer a most in teresting look at McHenry county and the animal problems., 1. Do yoft know what HP is? 82 yes and 22 no. 2. What does HP do? Most people felt HP cared for strays, injured and lost pets. 3. In what county do you livet The answer was McHenry county in all cases. Length of residency averaged to 11 years. 4. Do you like dogs and or cats? 99yes; 5no. How many do you have? Of those responding, most pet owners had dogs. 5. What facilities are in McHenry County? 12 people knew of HP and Animal Control. The others coijld not say. 6. Have you ever called HP or Animal Control and what about? 68 had called about strays, injured or lost and found. Overall, they were satisified with responses from both agencies. 7. What do you think is our county's biggest pet problem? 89 people said strays. How would you correct it? Response was overwhelmingly the same; have cheaper spaying and neutering services. 8. Do you read the HP column and if so in what paper? Each of our papers seemed equally represented but 43 people did not read the' column. 9. What would you like HP to do for pets in the future? 76 said the same as we are doing. Others said get more homes, three people said get a shelter. . 10. Do you believe in spaying and neutering? 97 people said "yes", 3, "in some cases" and 4 said "no". Hie results of this poll showed many interesting discrepancies. Some people wfib had said they were satisifieg with HP's help, were in fact confused with Animal Control. For example they thought HP picked up stray dogs in the HP trucks. Many people thought HP had a shelter. They assumed that to be doing all that HP is doing, certainly a shelter must be a part of the facilities for operating. One respondent said HP should advertise more...it is clear that this is true. Helping Paws learned a great deal from this poll because it is indeed a bprometor for telling what work is cut out for HP in the future.
