Box 205^ Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 * • (815) 459-2641 By Mary Nelson One • of the benefits of working for Helping Paws is the day to day situation differences. You can never count on any two days being alike. Last Tuesday was my day at^ihe office at 465 Virginiamreet. The other days, the secretary Florence Cass is there. Tuesday was a Very slow day; normally the phones ring off the hook. I was in fact, bored, Once home and relaxed in front of the T.V. I put HP behind me. I should have known all was too "Quiet on the Western Front"/ Around 8 p.m. the doorbell rang. There were seven children around the age of 11 years all talking at once about an injured cat they had caught but it got away atid was hiding under the hood of a neighbor's car. Sure enough, when the hood was lifted there was a very friendly but obviously not too well young male cat. His head and neck were raw with crusted blood and open sores, I called the vet and took the cat in immediately. They are keeping him to run some tests and his problems seemed to be malnutrition and a severe case of ear mites...both curable with tender loving care. While at the vets, I learned from the doctor that one of the people I sent to him for consultation had a happy ending to a sad story. It seems that this woman had lost her unborn baby and her, obstetrician told her it was due to a problem of Toxoplasmosis carried by cats...and most certainly her cat. She was told to destroy her cat and her problems would be over. She called the HP office two weeks ago to see if we could find a home for her cat as she loved it dearly and didn't want to have to put it to death. I advised her to take the cal in to HP's vet for testing before either adoption or destruction was considered. Upon completion of thte tests, it was found that the cat could not possibly be the cause of the tragedy and so both owner and cat were reunited in love. A word of warning; just because an MD says your child or you may be allergic to, or have received a disease from your cat or dog or pet, don't consider this the final word. HP has found so many times that it is easier to blame something handy -for an affliction than to test and treat. *- Take the pet to your vet and have it checked for whatever your doctor says is wrong with pbu. If it is allergies, gol through the scratch test. You may find that you are nob only allergic to pets as I am , but also to many other things as well...the pet is not always the culprit. Make sure before you take drastic action. , Getting. back to my Tuesday evening. It was not over yet. After I arrived home from the vet, I to close the house a< prepare for bed. I should have known, it was one of those dfeys. Soon the door bell rang and standing there, very much concerned, were two teenagel girls with a small, very well- manner brown dog. They didn't know who to call so late at night (10:30)and brought the dog to us. My son took the com placent little dog into his room where she would have, spent the evening. This was not to be, for at about 11:30 the phone rang and a young man asked if I had his dog. A few minutes inter owner and pet woe Reunited. And so finally Tuesday did end and another interesting day was had by all at our household. The fee for all dog adop tions includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery, If performed by a vet of HP's choice or a refund if per formed by a vet of your choice. ft.
