A flaw in a piece of white jade may be ground away, but a word spoken amiss may not be called back. -Confucius. A recent review of burn statistics from several hospitals has yielded some disturbing information related to burns in children. An ever increasing number of children are receiving very serious burns from hot tap water. Most of these burns are related to contacts with water in the bathtub. Further investigation has indicated that most, if not all, of these burns could easily have been prevented. Parents must be aware of the dangers related to hot tap water and take the simple, but necessary, precautions. Anytime a young child is being given a bath there must be an adult or com petent older child in constant attendance. Leaving a child alone for only a few moments may fesult in a 'scald. The child plays with the faucets and may allow excess hot water to enter thf tub and be severely burned as a result. The situation constitutes the cause of most . of the hot tap-water burns. Parents, babysitters, or anyone responsible for the care of a child should remove the child from the! bath tub whenever they must ' leave the room to answer the phone, see who is at the door, or attend to any other business. The simple action of moving the child from the hazard will prevent ex tremely serious burns artd may prevent the death of the child; r There are other actions which may be taken, auchaa lowering the temperature of the water heating equipment or installing a temperature regulated safety faucet.,The* lowering of the water temperature will have the added effect of reducing ? your eriergy use- and fuel bills. Recent studies have demonstrated that* tap water heated to 51 degrees C. (124 degrees F.) will produce a burn in 3 minutes. For each degree rise (centigrade) the time required to produce a burn is cut in half. Therefore, 52 degrees C. (125.5 degrees F.) will produce a burn in only 1.5 minutes. . Most homes . maintain water temperature in excess of 140 degrees F. (60.0 degrees C.), which . means that a child could \ Why uurc a vuauw wiui a * child? Keep the kids away from the hot water and prevent a serious burn. Instruct older children in the safe use of showers and hot water and be sure no young child is ever left unattended in the bath tub. Turn the water heater down to ensure safe tem peratures; a good setting for a water heater is 110 degrees F., and it will also ensure lower heating bills for the water heater. ARE YOU INTERESTED?
