65 Write to Carl Riblet, Jr. at Box 40757, Tucson, Ariz., 85717 for. information and advice on questions you may have as an elder citizen, with self-addressed, stamped envelope. All questions will be answered, either direct or in this column. by Carl Riblet Jr. ' Q. <My father has reached the ripe old age of 100. The pastor of our church made a sermon about it and told how my father had made it so far by not drinking liquor, never cussing, never getting ex cited about anything, not being lazy and never messing around with the women in Boston. My father was in the congregation and he was all smiles at what the preacher said. Just as the sermon finished, a young fellow who is well-known as a smart alec, got up and said very loud: "Imagine! A hundred years of that.' It sure upset the church. Half the people laughed right out loud. Don't you think it was bad for that wise guy to do that?" - Armitage P. A. Yes. It was disrespectful. However, I tend to agree with the basic idea of the protest. It must, have been a very dull life compared with the life of a . man of 1001 interviewed as a young newspaper reporter in 1931. The ancient told me that he drank whiskey all his adult life, cussed frequently, chewed tobacco and had had four wives in quick suc cession. He said he ha£ tried not to work very mud^all his life. You see! There may be a formula for long life, but I don't think anyone has yet found one that works for everybody. That's one of the reasons we don't all live to be 100. Q. Life is very lonely for me, a wheel-chair widower of 73. I would like to correspond with somebody far away. Not overseas, but anywhere far away in the U.S. or Canada. It's no use forme to have a pen pal here in California, because I know about California, having traveled all over the state for many years. Could you give me the names of people to write to in New England or the Carolinas?" - Percy S. A. My promise to readers was not to reveal their identities. However, I am going to, start here and now organize a club thaj/fhay appeal to many readers who say they wantpen pals. The name of th^club is to be Pen Pals PaptoS. All who wish to join^because they want 8oprlebody to write to, can id me a note (with self- Idressed, stamped en velope) saying they want a "pen pal and that they want to be matched to others who also want to be pen pals.: They should state their preferences - pen pals nearby qr across the con tinent, in Canada, Alaska or Hawaii. Address requests to Pen Pals Past 65, in care of jn8f Q. "Here is a music sheet that shows how to sing and play the music for 'Come Little Leaves' which was requested by your Canadian reader. Can you give me her name and address so I can write her?" - F.X.K. A. All the letters have been sent on to Miss N.R.H. in Edmonton. She may decide to write F.X.K. Hundreds of others have sent in words to the poem-song and the let ters are still pouring in. Q. "I want to set you straight, Mr. Riblet. Knowing who Elinor Glyn was does not make a woman past 70:1 have all her books that I bought when I was 16 and I am now 64. My youngest sister can tell you who Elinor Glyn was and she is only 44. There must be a better way to tell a woman's age than that." - Mrs. J.F. A. I thought my idea was smart and I never figured it would come up against a genuine Elinor Glyn fan and thus make it not so smart. Q. "Does anyone of your readers know the author of an old Gothic novel entitled 'The Eagle's Nest'? The hero's name was Lance and he was a young mountaineer who kidnaped the heroine from her rose garden. I am looking for a copy of the book for nostalgia's sake." - Mrs. W.T. A. Two books wefe published under that tittle near the turn of the t one written by Bjornrftierne Bjornson in 1908,yand the other written by Allan McAulay in l9Vt. Mrs. W.T. probably canJocate copies of. the booksjtafy advertising in the Aptlquarian Bookman, P.p^Box AB, Clifton, N.J. }15. Q. "I am 82 and I live alone. I have some Treasury bills with my two daughters named in joint account. Would they have any trouble getting them when I die? Or would the state take them?" - Edna C.R. A. Edna probably has nothing to worry about. If her two daughters are on the account they should get the T-Bill8 if the worst occurs for Edna. However, to play it safe, Edna should seek legal advice. She can go to the Legal aid society or a local legal clinic and check to see if the joint account is set up to do what she desires. Q. "I need help in knowing who to contact for future housing needs for senior citizens. I am interested in checking both on rentals and purchasing in California, Oregon and Arizona. I am 63 and will be retiring in a few years on a small income. I have made the error so many others have made. A few years ago, when retirement seemed a long way off, I could not afford to buy a house. Now I can't afford to buy one because the interest rates are so high, and my income so loW the banks won't lend to me. I am just above the FHA loan line of $15,000: However, taxes take their toll so that ac tually what is left is a good bit below the loan line. Can you help with some in formation?" - Mary T.N. A. Mary can write to the chamber of commerce office in each of the cities she is interested in, requesting a housing list and prices. She may discover that the len ding market will soon ease so that she can buy a small house. She would do best to visit, at her vacation time, the city she prefers - in advance of retiring. She can then inquire locally for places to rent or buy. and also contact a lending in stitution to determine if she is eligible for a loap in that town. Q. "The woman Anna Mae who wrote that she wants to know what her age of 71 has to do with getting a divorce from her husband of 51 years so she can marry someone else, is dead wrong. Isn't her husband entitled to some consideration?" - Hans G.L. A. Presumably she did consider him and he lost. Q. "I think Anna Mae is brave to divorce the man she suffered with for 51 years. Age has nothing to do with it. Old people have feelings, too, and love can be one of them." - Kate D. A. History and legal precedent both show that people fall in love at so- called advanced ages. Love can come to anyone of any age. Q, "I am sick of living in the city with the dirt,- o v e r c r o w d i n g , c r i m e , pollution and speeding cars. I am trying to get my wife to move out to a small farm in the country, even at our age of 63. We have no experience except a garden. What do you think of my idea?" - Tony T. A. It may be a good idea if Tony can afford it and his 'wife will agree to such a drastic uprooting. But they should weigh all the factors. A new life in the country can be tough on a city dweller. And in the country where the concrete may be whiter, the autos go faster. Mr. and Mrs. Tony may want to learn how to be small farmers, but they will soon discover that eggs and milk are less expensive when they come from the city in handy-sized cartons. Write to Carl Riblet Jr., at P.O. Box 40757, Tucson, Ariz. 85717 for information and advice on questions you may have as an elder - with self- addressed stamped envelope enclosed. William Dodds, have announced that the school's accreditation has been extended through the 1979-80 school year following the review and approval of its annual report at the North Central association's annual meeting. Accreditation is for One year at a time and rhust be renewed annually; Once every seven years each NCA school must un dergo a comprehensive self- study followed by an NCA evaluation team review. McHenry high school was last evaluated in 1979. A school is accredited on the basis of its report on con ditions existing in the school and on such supplementary information as the Com mission on Schools requests. The report for 1979-80 assures the school of ongoing NCA membership and ac creditation . This continued accreditation means that the conditions for effective education exist in the school. The North Central association is the largest of the country's regional ac crediting agencies. It is a voluntary league of over 4,700 schools and 850 colleges and universities in 19 states, plus the Department of Defense Dependent Schools throughout the world. A total of 627 schools are accredited in Illinois. The association works with individual schools to improve th^ quality of education through a continuous process of evaluation and ac creditation. Dr. John S. Kemp, NCA state director at . the University of Illinois, Congratulated McHenry high school on its continued ac creditation for 1979-80. "This should be a matter of satisfaction to the students and the parents of the school, since accreditation gives assurance that the school meets those minimal yet rigorous preconditions for effective education established by the association. Through this voluntary membership in the NCA, the school and the people in the district have committed themselves to the pursuit of quality in ^cation."
