PAGE I -PLAINDEALER • WEDNESDAY. JUNE 1M«W EARL WALSH So I Hear It gives a person a chuckle all to himself or herself to think of funny things that happen along the way. For no good reason, I am thinking about a fellow in McHenry many years ago who actually sawed off a limb of a tree while perched on that same limb. And -- this also happened. While visiting friends one time, I was, trying to end a lengthy back yard con versationwith a fellow "who just "dropped by". The lady of the house came out the back door and couldn't see the fellow around the corner of the garage so yelled, "Did that pest finally go home?" How do you answer that one? When I think of my lifetime friend, "Red" Winkel, as I often do, many a humorous happening comes to mind. We drove to Chicago one time in a Model "T" Ford touring car in search of jobs. I was armed with a letter of recommendation from our local banker, Carl Stenger, to an executive in a large office. We thought it best to get my job sewed up first, thinking satd executive would greet me with open arms. It must have been a fifth ranked assistant who took letter and said he would oh file. old story -- don't call us -\we'll call you. We drove around Chicago until alire blew out and we had toJpool our resources to buy a'new one. That did it! We headed for home, but decided we had enough cash left to take in a show and buy two boxes of popcorn. By the time we arrived at my mother's home, we were like the starving Armenians heard so much of in those days. Sitting here and recalling funny things brings to mind a time when a neighbor wrote a letter to her daughter and gave it to my mother for me to mail. The letter went in my coat pocket. No reply for some time so my mother quizzed me -- "Did you mail that letter I gave you?" "Oh. indeed I did" Under my breath. I said, "yesterday". It will be interesting to see how the moratorium on parking meters works. One thing that brought on meters was the practice of business people and their clerks parking in front of other business places that meant war "Big" Earl Dowell was McHenry s Chief of Police at the time and tried to reason with those who pulled the t r ick . With no regula t ions to back him up, he had a hard time. How times have changed. Now you face at least a five dollar fine if you exceed two hours of free parking in metered areas. When meters were first installed, the fine was ten cents and some people howled their heads off when they had to pay that amount. SUDDEN THOUG m: Why are there so many broken bats in big league baseball this year? There used to be a stan dard warning to hold the trademark up. Are bats made of cheaper wood? I dunno. When S.I.H. and Mrs. S.I.H. returned home Friday afternoon from McHenry Country Club where Publisher Larry Lund hosted a party to recognize my years as sports editor, we agreed the party was one of the nicest things that has happened to us. It was great to have fellow Plaindealer* employees surrounding us and spreading good cheer. A happy note was having Lynn Lund join the group. "Brenda", poet laureate, presented me with a masterpiece entitled "The Old Pro". Laura covered all angles in her list of things "that come to mind", the first being, "We always know when Earl is coming because his cigar gets here first." Artist Kathy Mathews sketched my picture on the mounted sheet and put a shamrock on the coat lapel. Nice to have it signed by all those lovely girls. Mary Miller, check dispenser, recalled our years of association auu gave me a reporter's note book and hook shaped pencil. She thought her 24 years at the Plaindealer was a long time until she put it against my 45. She's just getting started. Tom Miller presented me with a "loving cup" with a treasured inscription. Yep. Many nice things have happend in our lives. This party was one of the nicest. OK MVUTf SHUTS QUIZ 1. Who won the Kemper Open Golf Tournament? 2. Steve Carlton plays pro baseball for what team? 3. A third-inning homer by rightfielder Mark Vogt and a run in the fourth on a wild pitch was all McHenry could come up with in the rest of the game, but Bellich had just begun. Bellich set another season- high mark of fifteen strikeouts by striking out the side in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. He had previously struck out 12 against Genoa in a 1-0 loss earlier this season. Bellich walked two and spread out two hits while breezing thru the opponents batting order. Last Wednesday and Thursday, McHenry took on Algonquin at home and split. winning 2-1 and losing 13-1. In Wednesday's game, Dave Colberg picked up a complete-game victory while spacing out five harmless Algqnquin hits. Algonquin left six men stranded in the game, and the four McHenry hits were enough to produce the two runs. Shortstop Phil Brenner hit an RBI single and right- fielder Mark Vogt hit a triple for McHenry. Ken Hoff and Dave Colberg also collected singles for McHenry. On Thursday, Algonquin belted out 16 hits off three McHenry pitchers to record a 13-1 cake walk. Although McHenry had seven hits, they were unable to hold a second-inning 1-0 lead. The lone McHenry run was driven in by a John Seaver single which scored right fielder Mark Vogt. McHenry pitcher, Chuck Dicker was three for three to pace the losers. After last weeks action, McHenry is now 2-2 in Connie Mack league and 1-0 in Legion ball.
