In June, 15 new Seniors were welcomed into i he meal program and other activities at the center. The Crystal Lake Multi Purpose center had the banner the month before and was the second runnerup during June, with seven new particpants. The project was begun at 'the request of the Nutrition Project Advisory council. It wanted a visible means of rewarding a Meet & Eat site for encouraging new par­ ticipants. The McHenry Senior center formed a committee with Sam Leo as coordinator. The banner, measuring 3 feet by 5 feet and hung on a gold rod with red tassel, has an^mbroidered eagle at the top, the Meet & Eat logo in the center (hands clasped in the center of a plate), with thewordsMcHenry County Senior Citizens council stitched at the bottom. Points project around the circle. The Meet & Eat program served the first meals to seniors July 25, 1975. On Friday, July 25, 1980, there will be a third anniversary celebration at the center featuring a special program. The Senior center is open with arts and crafts, cards, dances, movies, art classes and other activities from 10:30 to 3:30. Dorothy Loss is hostess-site manager and Millie Nedjely is assistant hostess. Rotary Exchange Student At International Meeting FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 31, 1930) H. E. Buch has rented his store, formerly occupied by his plumbing establishment, to F.S. Walsh, prescription pharmacist of Chicago, who is making arrangements to open a drug store at this location. A fountain will be installed, and fixtures designed and manufactured by Gutmann Store Fixture company will be used. Four lots in West McHenry, involving $10,000 in notes is the subject of a suit to foreclose a trust deed filed last week in the Circuit court at Woodstock by James P. Nicholson of Lake county against James Morrow, late of Waukegan, and his wife, Ottie B. Morrow. Fred Kamholz opened his barber shop in the former office building of Dr. A. I. Froehlich on Main street. Mr. Kamholz, who has conducted a barber shop in the Heimer building, recently purchased the of­ fice building when Dr. Froehlich moved his office lo Green street. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 25, 1940) When she was but 90 years, 7 months and 8 days young, Mrs. Margaret Goodman, the oldest resident in McHenry, slipped quietly away to her eternal reward July 21. She was the widow of Professor F. M. Goodman, dean of the Chicago College of Pharmacy, a branch of the University of Illinois. On the whole, McHenry county shows an increase in population to 2,110 during the past 10 years, although three of the 10 villages had a decrease in population. Figures released show that Cary, Fox River Grove and Union have all had a decline in population. In 1930 McHenry had a population of 1,354. In 1940 it was 1,594. The seventh Chicagoland Neatest Dairy Farm contest has attracted 224 Pure Milk farms to compete for honors in this annual affair which is sponsored by the Pure Milk association. When the entry period closed there were 74 more farms registered than in the 1939 contest. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of July 28, 1955) McHenry residents are looking forward with en­ thusiasm to the v new McHenry State bank, the construction of which begins this week at the corner of Green and Elm streets. The 55-year-old structure, which had become a landmark in the center of the city, was completely raised and the ground cleared for the new building. Pioneer residents still remember that the Baptist church originally stood on this corner. The new site was chosen because of the central location and because it would allow V - ample space for parking and drive-in facilities. Four members of the state-winning high school violin quartet appeared on a Chicago amateur hour program. They included Dianne Pieroni, Kathleen Anglese, Judy Freund and Sue Stinespring. the quartet won top state honors last spring. Last December Jean and Joan Weber, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Weber, appeared on the program. PAGE It • PLA1NDEA1.ER - FRIDAY. JULY IS, IBM TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files July 29, 1970) of The financial problems of McHenry County college, along with recom­ mendations for prudent operation of the college with the money available, came up for considerable discussion at the college board meeting. Dr. Forest Etheredge, president of the college, announced that the Illinois School Board association has informed him the college has been given a Class I institution rating, which assures the college a high rate of reimbursement from the state. A robbery which netted almost $500 occurred about midnight at the Skyline Drive-In theair^. He is leaving shortly for a year abroad in Blackwater, Queensland, Australia, as the guest of a family there under auspices of the Rotary club of that communityv The conclave was spon­ sored by Central States Rotary Youth Exchange Program, Inc., an organization embracing Rotary exchange programs in Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and On­ tario. The purpose of the two days was to provide op­ portunity for interchange among the many nationalities, and to assist in the orientation of American and Canadian students leaving next month from their year abroad. The meeting also served to enhance contact between the exchange students and their Rotary district chairmen. A highlight was the presence of the president of Rotary International, Rolf Klarich, of Helsinki, Finland. In all, there were three categories of students: Those foreign students in the midst of their stays in America or Canada; American and Canadian students preparing to leave for their years abroad; and those Americans and Canadians just returning from a year away. The Rotary youth ex­ change program is available to high school students of this area through arrangements with the local Rotary club.
