Evergreen is a moving story of Anna Friedman, a beautiful Jewish immigrant from Poland. Anna lands in teeming Manhattan fin the early 1900's. Hired as a servant in the elegant town house of the wealthy Werner family, she falls in love with their eldest son, Paul. But Anna realizes that her love for Paul is doomed. She marries Joseph Friedman, a hard-working and kind house painter who founds a real estate empire, enabling his family to live the American dream. Anna is a good wife and a devoted mother to her children, Iris and Maurice, although she is forever linked to Paul in a secret passion. There are good times and bad; the bilterness of the Depression, the horror of the Holocaust, the triumphs and terrors of emerging Israel influence her life and the lives of Maurice and Iris. At 78, Anna cradles her great-granddaughter and reminisces. Hers was not an "heroic life", rather a life of family, of h'dpes and fears, and of love-both lost and "An epic of people you know.
