age, which is that I'm more than hunk.' The brass wants more PAOC B MEDIA MONITOR CBS's cure all Gregory Harrison by Steve K. Walz New York--According to present day prime-time strategy, the best way to break in any new show is to give it a strong lead-in program. CBS, looking to bounce ABC and NBC respectively, put together a lethal package of Sunday night programs last September, which included 'Trapper John M.D.,' a new entry which dealt with the famed 'M*A*S*H' doctor in a contemporary storyline. With 'The Jeffersons' serving admirably as its lead-in, 'Trapper John' became a hit, insuring stardom for veteran actor Pernell Roberts and hand some young thesp Gregory Harrison. Hype As the show begins its shooting schedule for the second season, CBS is mapping out a publicity blitz around Harrison in order to project the 30 year-old actor as Holly wood's latest macho, male sex- symbol. His character, Dr, Gonzo Gates has a maverick approach to life, which is reflective of Harrison's own vitality. Greg, a native of Southern California, admittedly enjoys the attention and fame, but he is also trying to put his image in proper perspective. "My only concern is that I put forth the right kind of a beefcake. I mean there was a scene in one of last year's episodes where I'm in my swim trunks in the operating room. I don't want to have to say to people that I'm an actor," Greg told me on a recent jaunt to the Big Apple. "What has happened because of the emphasis on my physique is that I'm now in a gym trying to keep myself together, because I'm more self-conscious now. Christ, I'm gonna be a multi-millionaire if this series contunies, so I've got to look good! But it's funny, after doing the series version of 'Logan's Run' (canceled by CBS in '78), I turned down many things after ward, but for some reason I liked this script and the producers seemed to have integrity. Besides, I knew this role would turn somebody into a star so I went ahead and did it." Preview Greg doesn't expect Gonzo or the show to change too much next season, although the affable actor did mention that 'Trapper John' would be going on location more often and that his character will fall in love. But don't fret girls, Greg is still a happy-go-lucky bachelor. "Gonzo and I have lots of things in common. We love women, we both were medics in the army and we both have very little regard for authority. The only difference between us. is that Gonzo has all of the witty remarks and zingers because of the writers. I'm not as witty." he kibbitzed. Harrison, who likes to sing and play guitar in his spare time, will show audiences another side of himself in two major TV flicks which will be aired sometime during the 1980 season. For NBC, Greg lensed 'Enola Gay,' the story of the B-29 bomber which dropped the A-bomb on Japan, and he will have a guest starring role on the ABC mini-series The Womens' Room' as Lee Remicks' young lover. "This will keep people from locking me into one character," added Greg. "I had no trepidation about doing 'Enola Gay' in particular, because that story should be told. Today's new generation should understand how we stumbled into the nuclear age and why and how the bomb was used, and why it wasn't controversial at the time." Although he doesn't consider himself much of a public person, Greg chides those so-called stars who won't talk to the press or give autographs, claiming that those who make it in show-biz "know damn well what's expected of them." With that kind of outlook, Greg should be able to 'operate' in Hollywood for a long, long time. TV COMPULOQ Himcil. INC.
