Ten newly-graduated nurses are now in the three- month nurse internship being offered at McHenry hospital, according to Ron Cooker, R.N., director of the hospital's nursing service. "This internship program was first presented in 1977 and has proved to be a successful bridge between classroom experiences and '78 Census professional performance," Cooker said. "The internship is designed to absorb the shock of transition from a student status to the position of professional responsibility as a staff nurse. Our principal objective is to help new graduates gain confidence in their ability to give and direct individualized patient care, and to assist each in improving vital nursing impr< skills. Cindy Amore, R.N., who was a nurse intern herself three years ago, will supervise the program, under the direction of Pat Kelly, R.N., M.S., nursing education coordinator. $74.7 Million In Farm Product Sales In County The 1978 market value of agricultural products sold by the 1,271 farms in McHenry county amounted to $74.7 million or an average of $58,805 each, up from $53.5 million in 1974 with an ac­ companying increase in production costs, according to a preliminary report of the 1978 Census of Agriculture released by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. A breakdown of the county's total agricultural sales for 1978 followed by that for 1974, is as follows: Crops, $37.7 million com­ pared with $24.5 million; livestock and livestock products, $36.8 and $26.6 million; poultry and poultry products, $306,000 and $2.3 million. While the value of gross sales rose, the farmers' costs also climbed since 1974. Expenditures for fertilizer for 1978 were $6.7 million compared to $4.3 million; costs of gasoline, diesel and other petroleum products were $3.5 million compared to $2.3 million. Some 77 percent of the operators owned all or part of the land they operated. In 1978 the average age of farm operator was 49 years. Since 1974 the proportion of operators listing farming as their principal occupation changed from 69 percent to 63 percent. Other results of the census show that the number of farms increased from 1,250 to 1,271, while the average size remained the same at 212 acres. All land in farms totaled 269,122 acres in 1978 compared to 264,419 acres in 1974. Land from which crops were harvested increased from 197,858 to 213,801 acres. The inventory of cattle and calves changed from 50,432 in 1974 to 44,876 in 1978; the number of hogs and pigs changed from 22,650 to 34,697. Hens and pullets of laying age decreased from 229,496 to 27,425. Acreages of crops har­ vested for 1978 and 1974 were as follows: corn for grain, 117,901 acres vs. 87,077 acres; hay, 30,595 acres vs. 31,554 acres; soybeans, 43,682 acres vs. 38,786 acres; vegetables, 4,729 acres in 1978. Production of corn for grain for 1978 was 12.7 million bushels compared to 5.8 million bushels in 1974. The figures are for farms qualifying under the definition: Any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year.
