oooooooooooo Safety Hints BBBBOBBBBBBBC By Alan J. Dixon Secretary of State Labor Day, providing the last three-day weekend of the summer, usually brings an overflow of motorists onto our nation's highways. One of the most important safety rules that I can recommend is to drive defensively. The best form of defense is to expect the unexpected. Be alert for other drivers who might suddenly enter your lane of traffic without signaling their intent, and watch for vehicles coming onto the highway from en trance ramps. Always be ready to take evasive action, and plan an "escape route" as you drive. Then, if a sudden emergency arises, you will have a plan of action ready. If a collision seems inevitable, dori't panic - try to steer your way out of it. Do anything to keep from hitting head-on. If you must hit another car or object, try to do it at an angle. If there is any choice, select the softest thing to run into. This might be the ditch. Sometimes it is possible to avoid disaster by deliberately throwing your/ car into a skid. Drive carefully and have a safe and fun-filled holiday weekend. (A copy of the Rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Write to Alan J. Dixon, Secretary of S Springfield, 111., 62756.) Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 10, 11, 12), and Yom Kippur (Sept. 19,20) services will be conducted by Rabbi Jonathon Ginsburg and Rabbi Julie Gordon- Ginsburg, accompanied by Cantor Harry Solowinchik formerly of the Niles Township congregation. The husband and wife Rabbis, one of only two such teams in the world will conduct Sabbath services and workshops during the two week period as well. Rabbi Ginsburg is a multi- award winning Jewish scholar and has studied extensively in the United States and Israel. Rabbi Gordon-Ginsburg has studied Jewish Theology and Folkways in both the United States and Israel. State Police Put In Force "Operation Care" The Illinois State Police division of the Department of Law Enforcement will be participating in "Operation Care" for the 1960 Labor day weekend. Captain Hugh McGinley, commander of District 15 state police, headquarters inOak Brook, stated that "as in the past we will be ex pending manhours to sup port the combined accident reduction efforts in coor dination with surrounding states". The Illinois state police enforcement efforts will be concentrated on the 55 m.p.h. speed limit, with special emphasis on second division vehicles. Other objectives of nc less im- irtance are: 'f ...identify drinking and intoxicated drivers and prevent their use of the public highways. ...enforce all moving hazardous violations per petrated by large com mercial vehicles. ...establish high visibility patrol activities as a deterrent factor on designated C.A.R.E. high ways during the selected holiday periods. ...demonstrate the har monious cooperation in traffic efforts with other states to obtain voluntary compliance and eliminate hazardous violations. ...attempt to reduce motor vehicle accidents. ...promote the use of seat belts or child restraints and other life preserving equipment that reduces injuries and fatalities oc curring in motor vehicles. If you live by high principles you will not have to tell anyone. / New teachers instructing classes at East and West campuses this year are pictured above.
