PA'-«; 24 - PLAINDEALER • WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3. ltM Corn Silage Tips (Town and Country Tips By Dave v Plocher) It will not be long now until silo filling time. This crop is one of the major dairy and beef forages in McHenry county. It is important to do a good job of harvesting silage in order to have a quality forage to feed your livestock. Here are a few tips -- --The increased com paction^ forages in silos that, arewide and high will cotise seepage. As a rule of thumb, whole-plant corn silage with 70-percent moisture can be ensiled in silos less than 40 feet high. Lower the moisture level 1 percent for each additional 10 feet in height. --Fill the silo rapidly to encourage fermentation. Each day, fill at least 7 tons of corn silage in a silo that is 16 feet in diameter, 10 tons in a 20-foot silo, and 13 tons in a silo 24 feet across. --Adding nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) as cold-flow ammonia, urea, or a com mercial product is a satisfactory method nutritionally, and the NPN also acts as a preservative. Add approximately 5 pounds of nitrogen per wet tbn of corn silage (6 pounds of ammonia, 10 pounds of urea, or 35 to 40 pounds of a commercial product). --Minerals can be added when ensiling to balance the mineral profile of the corn silage at feeding. Limestone, dicalcium phosphate, and trace-mineralized salt could be added. --Research with chopped and rolled corn silage prior to feeding indicates some nutritional improvement with rolling. The level of undigested corn particles and whole kernels was lower in rolled corn silan. The rolled corn silagfe was consumed more completely with less residue from stalks and cobs remaining. The shredding action of the roller mill reduces bulkiness and increases palatability No reduction in the fat test occurred. The conditions favoring the use of rolled corn silage include: (1) mature com silage with hard kernels and coarse plant stalks; (2) dry or coarsely chopped silage; (3) corn silage used as a major portion of the ration; and (4) a high passage of kernels in the manure. Greenhouse-Residence - Imagine having fresh vegetables all year around and an energy efficient home all combined. A solar greenhouse-residence de veloped in 1977 by Science and ' Education Ad ministration Researches can do just that. It has been in use for 20 months as a home for employees on the Clemson university Research Dairy farm in South Carolina. The residents have greatly reduced their energy costs and food costs. The solar house was featured in the July issue of Agriculture Research. Call us for a copy of the article. Landscaping to Save Fuel III - According to Erin Hynes, Extension adviser, Agriculture for McHenry county, most of us are painfully aware that the cost of heating and cooling our homes has gone from merely ridiculous to totally outrageous during the last few years. Huge fuel bills have piqued interest in passive methods of modifying home tem peratures. One approach to energy conservation is the use of landscaping to alter the home's microclimate. Several factors influence the temperature surroun ding a building. Solar radiation varies seasonally, and is of primary im- porta nee in determining your home's heating-cooling needs. Topography, another factor, can cause wide temperature differences with slight changes in evalation. Structures also alter the microclimate by shading, altering wind direction and deflecting ground radiations. Other minor factors also influence your home's microclimate. Landscape materials in a carefully planned design will effectively modify the home environment and conserve energy. Plants and trees are of key importance, providing shade and controlling wind patterns. Earth mounds, or "berms" can also channel breezes and intercept low angle sun rays. Fences and walls, like plants, control wind and temperature. Ground covers such as lawns, patios, and driveways, vary in the way they influence their surrounding areas. Designing an energy conserving landscape requires careful planning.
