He played it safe by bringing along a stalwart f r i end to hand le any pursuers. If his ladylove had more than one brother, he brought several friends and considered them his "best man" and "groomsmen." When marriage by kidnapping became less violent, some girls may have missed the glamor of the whole thing but it remained thar«ustom of young ladies sought in marriage to pretend to be captured. To attend to her needs, she ttfpught a maid with her, today's "maid of honor" or "bridesmaid." Why a white gown? Many people today associate the bride's white wedding dress with "purity." Actually, white symbolizes joy - most appropriate for a wedding, llie early Romans wore white at feasts, births and other celebrations. To the Greeks, a white rose was the supreme symbol of joy. The idea of the wedding ring goes back through several customs. It may have started with cavemen whose rings were made of roped grass and tied around the bride's wrists and ankles to keep her spirit from escaping. Later, when a young man by custom approached a family to purchase a bride, he would bring gifts of livestock, trader goods and family treasures. A person back then often converted his wealth into the jewelry he wore, and the offering of rings and trinkets symbolized his fortune. - Others credit the early Egyptians with seeing the value of a wedding ring as the symbol of eternity - a sign that life, happiness and love have no beginning and no end. Placement of the ring on the third finger of the left Jiand was because the "ancients believed a vein ran directly from that finger to the heart. In medieval days, a large signet ring was often given to the bride and since most people are right- handed, she wore it on her left hand probably to be less in the way. Originally a symbol of fertility, the wedding cake has been round almost as long as weddings.' The Romans broke a thin layer of cake over the bride's head at the end of the ceremony to ensure a life of plenty. The crumb6 were gathered by guests as good luck tokens. In medieval England, guests brought small cakes and {Hied them in the center of a table. The bride and groom then attempted to kiss over them. When a traveling baker from France conceived the idea of icing all the small cakes together into 'one large cake, the modern tiered wedding cake was born. • v ' DANIEL GEHRKE AND DAWN WELCH VALENTINE WEDDING - Mr. and Mrs. Donald Welch. 2210 Orchard Beach road, McHenry, announce the engagement of their daughter.
