ItM GOLF Lawler To Pace Warrior Drivers After a 15-3 sepson in 1979, the Warrior golf team "hopes to be first" come season's end, but coach Charlie Cuda knows that Crystal Lake South is still the team to beat in theworth Suburban Conference. ^ "We have a good nucleus of under and upper classmen which should carry us through the season, " Cuda said. Although the varsity has only two seniors in Mike Lawler and Joe Bauml, the three juniors out this season should make for an adequate group of golfers. Cuda said that there are eight sophomores and eight freshmen out this year, and the sophomores could all make a strong showing in an effort to make the vor-° sity. Sophomores include Mike Bauml,Kirk Barnide, Brad Adams,Randy Buenzli, Rob Mortell, Scott Grady. Mike Lawler, a senior who won the Insurance Youth Classic this summer at McHenry Country Club, will fill the number one position for the Warriors/ Joe Bauml, Doug Mullen,Mike Nank and Mike Bauml should be a good combination for the varsity. The varsity will start its season at home against Grant High School of Fox Lake on September 2. "There's even a chance that we'll break our 11 previous records this year." "Sonny" won't even start practice for the Warrior swim team until after Labor Day, but he expects a good turnout for the 1980 campaign.Tonee Weyland, a senior who holds McHenry records in the 50-yd freestyle and 100-yd freestyle will be back along with eight other letterman.Sophomore Terri Blume with a record in the 100-yd backstroke plus a relay record, and Heidi Dass, also a sophomore with a record in relays are expected to be the meat of the warrior team- Other lettermen include seniors Diane Johnson, Diane Gregg and Beth Fox. Juniors who gained let terman status last year include Bev Finkbinder, and Sharon Foley. Although most of the girls have no "AAU background," Shanahan feels that swimming will cat ch on more and more in the area. "We've started the summer and winter swim clubs here recently, and more and more girls are getting in terested in it" Shanahan said. He thinks that Woodstock will be the team to beat in the four-team conference including McHenry, Dun dee, Crown and Woodstock. McHenry took third last year with a 4-12 record. "Dundee, with Jennifer Scarpelli, a state qualifier, has a real good team this year," Shanahan Commen ted. "I just hope for a good freshman turnout that will stay out."
