McHENRY 385-0294 TENNIS Sophs Won't Jinx Girls Team Sue Hutchinson and Nancy Glick, the one-two punch of Gary Gray's girl tennis team, are now gone. The only returning starter from last year is Jean Hoch, who played number three singles last year. In fact, Jean is the only senior out for this year's varsity squad at McHenry. Counting seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen, there are 50 girls out for tennis at McHenry this year, but only one senior... the odds are against them to say the least. "We have the best group of freshmen that we have ever had with a total of 26," gray said, "but most of ,our varsity is going to be made up of juniors and sophomores." After Hoch, who will play number one, Gray said he is not sure who will play the number two and three spots yet. As for doubles, Gray said the choices still have not been made. "Doubles is wide open right now, even though there are four or five here that started last year," he said. "I think anybody on the varsity could play and we wouldn't be very weak." Sophomores who will play an important role in the Warrior future include, Sue Schmitt, Monica Sieverin and Julie Larkin. McHenry, Illinois Woodstock, Illinois Sportsketch For 22 years, Bill Hut chinson has been coaching in some capacity with McHenry High school, and in that time has racked up some impressive statistics to go along with his statistics as a player. As a player at Schurz High School in Chicago, Bill gained eight major letters in football, basketball and track. He was captain of the basketball team and won all city honors in football and track. In college at the University of Wisconsin at , Madison, Hutchinson played football and track. He led the Big Ten in punt returns one year and played against Southern California in the Rose Bdtol. As a coach, Hutchinson was assistant varsity coach for the only conference championship in football that McHenry ever won, in 1961. In 1962 he coached a wrestling team to a con ference title and coached them to a district title in 1968. He has sent 24 in dividuals to conference champs, 30 boys to district titles and five boys to state finals. PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. 8EPTEMBER 5,1196 Sportsketch Coach Gary Gray always has a joke or two to tell, so when he was asked his prediction for his girl's tennis team this year he quipped proudly,"We will finish this season." With 17 years of coaching under his belt, Gary started out at Gridley High School for three years before coming to McHenry. He is now in his 14th season with the Warriors. He originally is from Springfield, Illinois and went to Illinois State University in Bloomington and University of Miami at Coral Gables. At ISU, Gary played basketball as a freshman and joined the Peace Corp out of college. In his 14 years of coaching at McHenry, he has sent eight kids to the state tennis meets. Gray's wife is Judy, who serves as a substitute teacher, and they have three kids, Tlgn, 11, Doug, 7, and Mariann, 6. For his real prediction, Gary said he feds Cary- Grove has to be odds-on- favorites to win the con ference, while "the rest of us will trail behind."
