Three years ago, volleyball was changed to a Fall sport instead of a Winter sport in high school circuits. Since then, field hockey has dwindled in popularity among participants because volleyball was more ap pealing. A perfect example of this is McHenry High School, where the volleyball team has 65 girls competing, while the field hockey team has only 20. "I'm not complaining since 20 is the biggest crop of girls we have ever had," Cis Morner, the girl's field hockey coach said. " I know that field hockey has dwindled in Illinois since volleyball made the switch. Field hockey is just being slowly killed off as eviden ced by a Rockford team dropping out this year." Morner said that field hockey is definately here this year by announcing that practice would start Sept. 3. The announcement put to rest many weeks of rumors that the sport would also die in MCHenry. As for the team this year, Morner noted that two, four-year players would be back this year in seniors Sue Haddick, (center forward), and Kathy Bitter- man, (goaly). She also commented that 1980 should be' a rebuilding season with the strong point being the defense and the weakness being youth. She is the one who started the girls athletic program 10 years ago when she "threw a bunch of girls together and called them a softball team,". She is a graduate of N o r t h e r n I l l i n o i s University where she studied P.E. and played field hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis. Two years ago, Cis took her Field Hockey team down state where they lost to Edwardsville, the team that eventually won the tourney. She played for three years on the North Shore field hockey club in Deerfield, and now generates her interests towards selling real estate, golfing and camping. Best of Luck From All of Us At: 2104 N.
