Anglers, take heed. You're not alone in your pursuit of fish! There are millions of other creatures fishing, too. For tunately, their choice of species is usually different. Loons, gulls, cormorants, kingfishers, ospreys and mer gansers are the best fishermen in the world. Luckily for humans, birds are seldom interested in the same kinds of fish. Research has shown that most fish taken by birds are nongame species, although where it is possible to feed on gamefish, birds don't hesitate to do so. A survey of cormorants in the Midwest showed that half C & B RLITO & BORT REPRIR All Types of Auto Repair HOURLY RATE $18oc- CLIPBSRVE OIL SPECIAL This Week •5 QtS. •Filter •Lube • CLIP&SnVE 1923 MAIN STREET SPRING GROVE ILLINOIS 675-2030 or385-V489 their stomach contents were gamefish, the remainder non- gamefish and other aquatic life. Elsewhere, great blue herons were found to be eating mostly suckers, frogs and sculpins despite a healthy trout popula tion in the same stream. And in Michigan, biologists estimated that mergansers, ex pert diving ducks, were eating an average of five trout apiece, per day. Birds preying on fish is not one-sided. Fish' often feed on young water birds and one study proved that pike have a definite appetite for immature diving ducks. One of the loveliest days of the season came along this past Tuesday as the ladies of McHenry Country club began the wind-down of their golfing schedule with a guest day. Fielding about eighty women for a shotgun start the McHenry gals hosted a contingency of ladies from Woodstock Country club. With the course still showing traces of Monday night's storm all play was on the back nine only. In spite of fair weather no exceptional scores were reported. Three themes were the echoes which followed in the clubhouse - Lots of Fun, Beautiful Company - and Poor Scores. Playing a blind partner team event the following winners emerged. Carolyn Schmidt of Woodstock and Katherine Bolger of McHenry were first. In second place were Vila Benrud of Woodstock and Bea Pond of McHenry. A tie for third place was posted by Rosemary Azzaro, Wood stock and Frieda Miller, McHenry, and Dolly ALEXANDER LUMBER CO. No untoward events were reported, no dastardly deeds. The only birdie shot was that by Carol Cooney on No. 18. Ann Carroll of Woodstock chipped in on No. 17 and Kitty Evans sank her approach on No. 13 for a par. Bea Pond of the Nifty Niners had a couple of pars and, considering how little she has played this season, that's respectable. Some sort of fol-de-rol was going on in the County Clerk's foursome but no specifics were mentioned other than Rosemary A. was on the receiving end from Carol Cooney, Mary Bishop and Kathy Smith. Whatever it was, it made for Happy Golfing! Liz "fSSs?'
