Know these signs of frostbite should you decide to cavort in the snow -- burning and stinging of the skin; numbness; poor feet and hand coordination. At the first sign of any of these symptoms, find a friendly and warming hearth. WAUCONDA INVITATIONAL CHAMPS-The sophomores of McHenry High School's cross country team took first place out of 17 teams in the Wauconda Invitational meet last Saturday. A total of 129 runners competed in the 1.9 mile course. Kneeling in front are Eric Gaza and Roland Ostrander, while standing in the back are Darren Cepulis (fourth place), Brian Wright (first place-l0:29), Steve Carby (14th place) and Bob Sarabia (24th place). STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD EARL WALSH' So I Hear Football has crowded baseball off the sports pages until play-off and world series time. The Chicago Bears redeemed themselves after their showing at Green Bay the week before. But, big time sports writers are not willing to give the Halas team much credit for their victory. Don Bentz, who was a big man in more ways than one on MCHS teams some years back, is a great Bart Starr fan -- loyal all the way to the Packers. Haven't caught up to all the local scores, but hear the Warriors had a wide edge on the Grant eleven. It's a good thing they had an extra chair on the speakers' stand at the Johnsburg Rescue Squad ceremony last Sunday. Big "Pete" Peterson and A1 Jourdan sat next to each other and took up three chairs. All I can gather from presidential candidates is slam-banging the other guy. And that is what taxpayers are paying about 29 million dollars to each of the leading candiates to conduct their campaigns. The bundle of cash could go a long way toward helping the needy in this country. Cut taxes is the favorite theme. Cut waste and tax cuts will follow. Bernie Matchen, a member of the Cane Club has a prize cane that belonged to his grand mother. The world is full of troubles. Some people have ear trouble. Some have nose trouble and some have "I" trouble. Heard a talk on that subject recently. Gathered that the words we and our are neglected. One reader once told me he got a kick out of the frequent use of we in this column when I was being avoided. Guess there is a place for WE and a place for I. Also MY and OUR. It is good to see the Illini football team loom up as a winner. Now if somebody can do something about Nor thwestern. Hadn't seen Mrs. John Krauss in many a moon so it was a special treat to meet and greet this week. She is a long time friend and one of our readers. Can't beat that combination. Can't figure it out. Since retirement it takes me twice as long to wash my neck and ears, shave and dress than it did when I hustled off to work. It's a breeze to be a weatherman these days. Just predict rain and forget all that high pressure, low pressure stuff. People are talking about all the lawn mowing the rainy weather has brought on. That isn't all. It also brought us a bumper crop of mosquitoes, bees and hor nets. Foxhole Evo is so proud of the TAP softball players that he is thinking of buying the White Sox team and putting some of his boys in the lineup. Cutting a half hour off the Johnny Carson show will get us to bed at a more reasonable hour. Hope we don't wake up a half hour before the rooster crows.
