Start Carpool Program The Chicago Area Tran sportation study (CATS) is opening the data banks on its new "Commuter Com puter." Anyone in nor theastern Illinois interested in joining a carpool can sign up as erf this week.. A telephone call to 793- RIDE and the answers to a few questions - name, phone number, home and work addresses, schedule - are all it takes. The information will be fed into the Commuter Computer which is programmed to match likely prospects. As soon as there are even two names that match, the individuals will be notified by hiail. Employers, towns, or associations interested in setting up car pools or other ride-sharing programs also can get help from CATS by calling 793-RIDE. The agency, which coordinates transportation planning in the six-county (Lake, McHenry, Dupage, Cook, Kane, and Will) Chicago region, will provide promotional materials, speakers^ well ay match C^Tp*K?rtfcuHve Director Aristide E. Biciunas ex plained that the Commuter Computer has done well in smaller scale programs. "In May," Biciunas said, "we helped the Northwest Suburban association of Commerce and Industry set up a ride-sharing program for people working in Hoff man Estates and Schaumburg. This is an area with many jobs and very little public transportation. There were several positive factors including cooperation from area employers but even so we were very pleased by the response. As of now, some 1,300 people have signed up for carpool matching." A similar program, sponsored by the Cicero Chamber erf Commerce and Industry, is currently un derway in that western suburb and others are being scheduled. Some 2,000 names already are on file in the computer. The more names added, of course, the more carpools can be formed. A large number of names also means faster matching. Because the program is just beginning it probably will take two to three months before carpools actually are on the road. Mr. Biciunas said carpools are one of the best ways for an area to cut down on fuel consumption and for in dividual commuters to save money on transportation. "We know that automobiles consume about 5.6 million gallons of gasoline in the Chicago area every day," Mr. Biciunas said, "and that the average occupancy per car is 1.2 persons. A realistic estimate, say one percent of drivers joining carpools, could save more than 50,000 gallons of gasoline a day." The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates carpoolers can save $250 to $1,000 annually. For example an individual who drives ten miles each way to work every day in a stan dard-sized car would save $480 by splitting costs with one passenger. Reduced insurance costs are another possible benefit. Similar computer- matching programs are in use in other large cities including Los Angeles, Dallas, Boston, Seattle and Portland, Ore. Results in these areas have been good with Lbs Angeles reporting 30,000 ridesharing calls per month. "Everyone is concerned about prices today," Mr. Biciunas said, "and people have shown that they want to reduce the amount of gasoline they use. Carpools are not the only answer but they can be a good part of the solution and we know that the Commuter Computer can help." Legal Notice IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE 19TH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT.
