Foxhole Wins 16" Crown A 10-1 victory over 3-D Bowl in the championship game of the men's 16" playoffs highlighted an undefeated season for the Foxhole Tap and served as a warm-up for the 12" playoffs. The final game followed a different pattern than the first two games of the three out-of-five series which ended in close £-6 and 8-7 scores The Foxhole record stood at 19-0 after the final game and left no doubts in the minds of the diehard fans as to who the dominant team was in 16" softball In the final match. Foxhole went three-up, three-down as 3-D Bowl managed a wasted triple in the first two innings In the third, however, Foxhole exploded with a five run inning Ron Miller led off with a double and scored on a single by second baseman Denny Meyers Vinnie Freund then doubled Meyers home and scored on a Gary Fairchild single Two fielders choices and consecutive singles by Rich Meyer and Dick Kazlausky added two more runs while Billy Meyers ended the in ning on a grounder to second. The fourth was scoreless, but in the fifth. Foxhole scored five more runs on four hits and 3-D tallied its only run of the game on an error, a single and a fielder's choice. For Foxhole, Denny Meyers was three for three with one RBI and one run scored. Ron Miller was two for three with a run scored, while Rich Meyer, Myron Bentz and Gary Fairchild all collected two RBIs 3-D could manage only two hits off pitcher Bill Meyers and the stingy Foxhole defense In fact. 3-D collected only 16 hits in the whole three-game series Foxhole advanced to the finals by clipping Old Bridge in two close games ending in 6-4 and 3-2 scores. 3-D Bowl beat Nancy's Tavern in a two-out of-three series to earn their right to the finals Joel Wakitsch MEDALIST WINNER-for last week's Johns burg golf match against Harvard was Dooley Stanell. who shot a 40 during the 186-182 loss. Winning the first set, 6-2, Hartjes fell 4-6 in the second set before battling to a 6-6 tie in the third set and sending the match into a seven point tie-breaker situation. Losing 6-5 in the tiebreaker, Hartjes needed to get the next point to stay alive, but her return popped off the tape at the top of the net, teetered on the rim and fell on her side of the net to send Johnsburg to its fifth straight loss, 3-2. Johns burg stayed close by winning the number one singles match, with Kathy Szumlas victorious in two sets, 6-1, 7-6 to run her season record to 3-1. The Johnsburg golf team is still searching for its first victory of the season as they went down to the Crystal Lake South golfers at the Crystal Lake Country Club last Friday by a 156-193 score The best Johnsburg could muster was a 43 by Tom Pieper and a 46 by Dooley Stanell. Stanell shot an 87 for the day, while Pieper rounded out a 90. Other varsity scores came from Tom Young with a 101, Jeff Bartmann with a 102 and Frank Jakubicek with a 98. The varsity dropped its season record to 1-3. The Crystal Lake South "Gators" won a high scaring game from the Warriors last Friday night, 36 to 21. It was a crowd- pleaser all the way, with 57 points being scored by the teams, and the fans going away with their money's worth for the evening. It was a case of the Warriors running out of gas in the final period, as the Gator's ground attack simply wore the linemen of Joe Schlender down to a frazzle. Up to that time it was tied at 21, and the possibility erf another overtime game was in the making, but it just didn't come to pass for the Warriors. The Warriors took the opening kick off on their own 25. After a first down pass from Belzer to Tim Klapperich, the Gators held and forced a punt to their own 17. Two plays later Scott Schmitt intercepts! a pass on the 40, and a penalty gave the Warriors the ball on the 25. Rob Kalck picked up 16 to the nine. Doessel and Kalck got the ball to the 4, and on a fourth down fake field goal, Sean Haley flipped a pass over the center to Kalck all alone in the endzone for the score at 5:04. Haley then kicked the PAT and the Warriors led 7 to 0. After the ensuing kickoff the Gators marched to their own 40, where they fumbled. The Warriors returned the favor on the first play. The Gators marched to the Warrior four, where again they fumbled and the Warriors recovered on the eight. The Warriors moved all the way out to their 46, before they were forced to punt, as the period ended. South, starting on their own 14, began a march that brought them to the Warrior 16 with the aid of a face mask penalty. Murphy then hit Rick Jewel with a 16 yd. T.D. pass at 4:10, and John Murphy's kick good tied the game at seven all. Dave D'Angelo then tlyilled the large local crowd when he took the kickoff on his own 20. and running straight up the middle behind perfect blocking raced 80 yards for the score. Haley's kick was good and the Warriors led 14 to 7. After the Warriors' kicked off to the Gator 25, the Gators marched back down field with Jewel and Murphy doing the mail-toting, and with 53 seconds remaining in the half. Bob Jewel raced five yards for the score. Murphy's kick was good as the teams went off the field at the intermission tied at 14. The Warriors kicked to the Gator's 32 yard line to start the second half. Both Jewel and John Murphy each picked up 18 yds. giving the ball to the Gators on the Warrior 32. Murphy then ran for the score and kicked the point and at 8:14 of the period the Gators led 21 to 14. Taking the ball on their own 33, quarterback Keith Belzer began to limber up his passing arm, and proceeded to complete five in a row. First he hit Dave D'Angelo to the Warrior 49 D'Angelo again was open for a pass to the Gator 35. Tim Klapperich picked one off to the 22. John Doessel made a nice catch to the 17. Sean Haley caught one for a first down on the Gator 4. The Warriors got to the one, when a penalty set them back to the six. Belzer then found Haley all alone in the end zone for the score, and Haley's kick was good, the game was tied again at 21 with 2:41 remaining in the period. The Warriors marched 67 yds., mostly through the air, for the score. After the kickoff the Warriors held, and as the fourth period began, had the ball on their own 14. The Gators held and the Warriors who punted to their own 46. Then the Gator machine hit high gear, and they marched 46 yards for the score with Bob Jewel going in the last 12 yards for the score. Steve Murphy's run for the PAT was good and the Warriors trailed 29 to 21. After the kickoff, Belzer's pass was good to D'Angelo and along with a 15 yard penalty gave the Warriors the ball on the 47. A deflected pass fell into the hands of a Gator on their own 45. Then the heavier Gator line simply out manned the smaller Warriors as the Gator backs found opening after opening, and Steve Murphy on a roll out went four yards for the T.D. and brother John kicked the PAT for a 36 to 21 win over the Warriors. It was simply that the smaller Warriors were wore down, especially in the line. However, it was a great game from a viewing standpoint. For three quarters, both teams marched up and down the field, until the Gators took command early in the final period. Belzer's passing had to be pleasing to the coaching staff, especially when they view the films and see that six were dropped As one fan remarked after the game, "even though McHenry lost, it was a great game", and that was the echo of many who attended the game. Hurt By Big Plays The final statistics read, Johnsburg 17 first downs, Hononegah 11; Johnsburg 62 plays from scrimmage, Hononegah 49; but the final score defied the facts, Johnsburg 8, Hononegah 29. In their first conference loss of the season, the Johnsburg Skyhawks can easily say that they out played their opponents, but Johnsburg mistakes and Hononegah big plays made all the impressive Skyhawk statistics obsolete. Dave Oberst only rushed for 20 yards in 10 carries for Hononegah after skirting 179 yards one week earlier, but he did his damage by run ning the opening kickoff back 89 yards for one score and later scoring on a one- yard run. That one yard run was the only touchdown that the Hononegah offense scored, while the other touchdowns came on the kickoff return, and two interception returns by Chuck Tabbert of nine and 26 yards. "Our defense played exceptional after last week's failure against Grayslake," Coach Bob Schmitt said. "We outplayed them; they just took advantage of our mistakes and the big plays." The Johnsburg touchdown came with a little over one minute remaining in the game on a nine-yard pass to Rick Neiss from Scott Valentin. Valentin had a good game passing as he threw 14 completions out of 30 attempts for 171 yards, but three costly fumbles from within the 20 yard line proved costly as Johnsburg lost all three mishandles. The Skyhawks also ran the ball well with five runners gaining a total of 101 yards. Alex Bingman carried 10 times for 43 yards, Doug Wickman gained 21 yards in 6 carries and Pat Rorig gained 20 yards in 7 rushes. Warren Moulis collected 17 yards on four carries and Pete Barroso carried twice for no yards. Rick Niess also caught eight Valentin tosses for a total of 101 yards plus the touchdown while Rob Sch midt caught two for 24 yards. Coach Schmitt said it was good to have the whole of fense back and that next week against Harvard in the Homecoming game, the defense should be ready for all-county wingback Mark Strieker.
