The Gators from Crystal Lake only averaged 32 yards per punt, but they were ahead in the scoring column, 36-21. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Must try to meet Dick Rabbitt to explain why I didn't join him in the new press box Friday night.' There were three places and events to attend in one night. Making one out of three isn't a bad batting average. Had a notion I would be back in town in time to see the last half of the game. No way. Will have to reserve my comments on the new coop until I see the inside plan. Bears lose 34 to 14. Is Chicago ever going to have a winner in sports? Rich Meyers Top Hitter in 12-Inch Rich Meyers was crowned the 1900 McHenry 12-Inch Batting Champion. The Foxhole Tap right centerfielder led all batters with a .667 average. Meyers, who had 34 hits in 51 at bats, helped the Foxhole to an undefeated record in both regular season and playoff competition, with 21 straight victories. Foxhole Tap placed six of the first batters in the top ten as they left little doubt as to why they completed such an outstanding season. The league leaders also placed one more batter in the top 20 while only (me batter finished under .400 from the entire roster! Matt Oik Doherty's hard hitting shortstop, finished second in batting average with a .645 mark. Oik led the league in total hits with 40, tied for the lead in triples with 4 and along with Rich Meyers finished fourth in home runs with 6 round trippers. Comment On Sports FOOtMLL * * * * By Pete Fritchie WASHINGTON, D. C. -- Here is how the pro football season will end, but don't bet your mink jock strap on it: In the newer but tough American Conference, Miami wins the eastern divi sion, Pittsburgh (who else) the central and San Diego the western. Runners-up, in the three divisions, should be: New England, Houston (which could win in another division, one suspects) and Denver. In the western division, both Oakland and Seattle might mess up the forecast; they're tough. In the eastern division, the Jets might be a surprise this season. In the National Conference, Dallas will win the eastern division, Tampa Bay the central (yes, again) ^and Los Angeles the western division. New Orleans is the sleeper in the western divi sion and both Chicago and Detroit might beat out Tampa in the central. Tampa's fortunes depend on Chuck Fusina. Doug Wil liams is suspect. The upset winner in the eastern division, which many are picking, could be Phila delphia, or even Washing ton. The Giants are improved also. But one must go with the Cowboys until someone dethrones them; Dann> White looks good at quarter back. The superbowl? Pitts burgh remains the favorite- but the odds are heavily stacked against a fourth title in a row for any team. In juries, weather, etc., can unseat the best. Pat Wirtz Foxhole Leads In Playoffs Doherty's and Foxhole Tap met each other in the first two games of the best of five championship finals in McHeni§r 1$-. Inch on Wednesday, September 17. The Foxhole swept (he doubleheader to gain a two game advantage as both teams prepared to battle on Monday evening. Bill and Rich Meyers led the winners in the 16-8 first game with as Bill clobbered two homeruns and a double with four RBI's and Rich went three for three with a homerun, double, base on balls and two RBI's. Both scored three runs. Bill Meyers again was instrumental in a much xlo6er 12-9 second-game victory. Bill slammed his third homerun of the evening along with a double and three RBI's. Both games provided softball fans with plenty of offense as the two ball clubs combined for 67 hits including seven doubles, six triples, eight homeruns and 45 runs scored! In fact 19 batters out of the 20 who batted in game one had at least one hit! GAME ONE Mike Rogers led off for Doherty's with a triple to right center to start the series. Rogers scored on John DeCiccio's sacrifice to give underdog Doherty's a 1-0 lead. Two batters later Wayne Roewer slammed a long homerun for a 3-0 lead. Foxhole finally scored a run in the second on two singles and a sacrifice fly with Myron Bentz scoring and Dick Kazlausky driving in the run. But Doherty's struck back in the top of the third as Wayne Roewer singled and scored on Rick Wiegman's two-out double. In the bottom half of the inning Foxhole roared back to tie the score at 4. Jeff Meyers tripled over the right fielder's head followed by bade to back homeruns by Rich and Bill Meyers. After Doherty's went three up, three down in the top of the fourth Foxhole Tap erupted for seven runs in the bottom half o( the inning. Seven batters hit safely along with three Doherty's fielding miscues all added to the beginning of the end for Doherty's. Big hits in the inning included Rich Meyer's double and Bill Meyer's two-run homer. Doherty's scored twice in each of the next two innings however, the winners matched them or did one better to breeze to their 16-8 first game win. Mike Rogers and Rick Wiegman both went three for four to lead Doherty's. Matt Oik and Wayne Roewer had three RBI's each; both going two for three. GAME TWO Foxhole Tap pulled out a 12-9 victory in game two despite Mike Roger's four for four and seven Doherty's extra base hits. Bill Meyers put the winners in front with a two-run blast in the first to give the Foxhole a 3-0 lead. Doherty's scored twice on a Rogers double and Matt Oik's two-run homer to close the gap to one. But Foxhole kept up the pressure scoring seven runs in the next three innings while Dohertys' was good for only three runs and the eventual winners held a 10-5 lead after four. Foxhole's Dick Kazlausky and Myron Bentz had two hits each during this stretch while Bill Meyers added a run scoring triple to his impressive totals. Wayne Roewer slammed a two- run homer in the third while Jim Wayman's leadoff triple followed by a sacrifice in the fourth brought in Dohertys' runs. In the fifth a John Burke two-out solo homerun followed by Rick Wiegman's double and Larry Winkleman's clutch base hit narrowed the lead to three runs. Foxhole scored a solo run in the sixth when Jeff Meyers led off with a double and advanced to home after two successive groundouts. But Dohertys' countered with two of their own in the bottom of the sixth as Matt Oak drove in both with a two- out single. An insurance run in the top of the seventh put the eventual winners up by three. Dohertys' first two batters popped up to the infield before Larry Winkleman and Jim Wayman both singled. However, the next batter grounded to pitcher Bill Meyers to end the game. Pat Wirtz Babe Ruth began his baseball career as a pitcher. After mentioning last week about Fox Hole Evo buying the White Sox, one reader advanced the idea that Evo's partner, "Red", should be the manager. Not a bad idea. "Red" knows what made their softball team into a winner. They changed brands. For several years fans were yelling for a City Series between the Cubs and Sox. Not this year. Some fans, like Herb Reihansperger, feel they have suffered enough and can't wait for the season to end. Herb said so himself. I don't dream those things. No, sir! Mentioning the purchase of a Muntz TV from Don Weingart brought out the fact that Don was working for Bob Adams in that sales venture. All he is today, Don owes to Bob. (Make your own com ments). Monday marked the first day of fall. McHenryites will soon be following the birds toward warmer climates. Have heard the Old Farmers Almanac predicts a mild winter in these parts. Notre Dame fans shook down the thunder as the Fighting Irish beat Michigan with a 51 yard field goal in the final three seconds of the game. Imagine, 51 yards! And against the wind. That ball had to have had the wings of an angel. You can't beat going around the circuit for a little nourishment if you want to meet people. For instance -- Walter Carey and his friendly wife, Peggy, told us they read the Plaindealer regularly both in McHenry and Florida. they remember many things about McHenry from the past.
