SECTION 2 - PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2«. 1960 Marine Insurance Varies Purchasing proper in surance for a boat is no more complex ' than buying adequate protection for a home or car. The most important thing to know when buying boat insurance is that is is not standardized. Factors affecting the kind of insurance needed include the size, type and value of the craft, the waters in which it will be used and the type and amount of coverage selected. Therefore, before setting sail, boat owners are urged to check with an ex perienced marine insurance agent or company to be sure that the policy they have is the right one for their craft. The following information suggests some of the things that should prove helpful when purchasing boat in surance. The basic homeowners policy can provide coverage for boats as unscheduled personal property, but this coverage is limited. Theft and physical damage coverage for a boat, its equipment, accessories, outboard motor or trailer if it were stolen while away from the owners residence. Usually there is no coverage against windstorm or hail unless the boat is stored inside a fully-enclosed structure. Theft of personal articles is covered only if there is forced entry into a secured cabin, compartment or locker. Coverage for the liability that may incur for injuring another person or damaging another's property while operating a boat is also D AUTOMOTIVE SUPPLY TURTLE EXTRA Last chanc* to cl«an up your car before winter strikes & save $$$$1 ALL WAXES & POLISHES 25%. The policy excludes coverage for the following: A boat with inboard- outboard motor power of more than 50 horsepower; sailing vessels (with or without auxiliary power) 26 feet or more in overall length; and watercraft powered by any outboard motor or combination of motors of more than 25 horsepower. These limitations of the basic homeowners policy can be overcome by scheduling the boat as an endorsement to the policy. The endorsement will state the value that the boat is insured for and will provide all-risk coverage - which means the boat is insured for all perils unless specifically excluded. If the provisions and limitations of the basic homeowners policy are unsatisfactory, there are alternatives you can con sider. Yacht policies are one alternative to the homeowners policy. Two basic coverages of the yacht policy, which are similar to many other policies, are hull insurance and protection and indemnity insurance. Hull insurance protects against damage to your boat and is usually written on an all-risks basis. It also in cludes the "running down clause," which will pay for damages to another boat and to the property on it which you cause by colliding with it. Damage to property not covered by the "running down clause," such as damage to piers and docks spurgeon's Something Brand New. . . This insurance will also repay you for any amount up to the policy limits for which you become legally liable because of injuries you cause to others. Hie policy will pay not only for injuries to members of the public, but also to crewmen, master and other employees. Two other coverages commonly available with a yacht policy are medical payments, which pays first- aid medical expenses for persons injured on your boat, and protection against any claims that might be made under the federal Longshoremen's and Harbor Workers' Compensation act. Because boat policies are not standard from company to company, you should make sure that you buy only the coverage that you need. Be aware, too, that prices for almost identical coverage will vary from company to company. You can also save money by increasing the deductible on your hull insurance, and some companies will give a discount to those who have completed U.S. Coast Guard boating courses. Many companies will also give credits for seasons when your boat is not in use, no matter if you take your boat out of the water or just leave it in its slip. Check with your insurance agent about these and other ways to save on boat in surance. 4-H NEWS JOHNSBURG WOOD CHUCKS The Johnsburg Wood- chucks, a fairly new 4-H club, received 38 ribbons at the McHenry County fair and gained one more at the Illinois State fair, to make their total 39 ribbons in all this year.
