Ghosties an' goblins 're on th' loose again, an' wi' Indian Summer on th' wane, 01' Man Winter awaitin' his chance t' take a swing at us, we prepare f r another bout wi' him. Many folks, down here in this rural area, 're goin' back t' stoves an' fireplaces, an' many a wood pile dots th' backyards. Only aboput half a century, it took, t' deplete Mother Nature's stocks o' th' "Black Gold" an' make mankind conscious o' th* extravagant livin' he's enjoyed, wi'out a givin' a thought t' preservin' f'r th' future. Petroleum-eatin' busses an' trucks replaced th' economical transportation we used t' have, th' trolley- cars, an' our fine railroad system, which were allowed t' deteriorate. Seems that they b'came too 'old- fashioned' f'r this modern generation. Now, it's a case o' th' old story, 'lockin' th' barn after th' horse is stolen'. This granny wonders what th' outcome'll be, wi' th' threat o' modern warfare on th' threshold, if we b'come embroiled in th' conflict, an' find it necessary t' use up our stockpiles o' precious energy. T'other day, someone on th' radio mentioned that it may be necessary t' tear up some o' th' fancy highways, in order t' plant trees. Again, th' hind-sight o' modern mankind. So, it goes. Many o' us older folk saw it a comin', when it all b'gan, an' this ol' lady was among those who hollered long an' loud, wi' me pen, believin' th' ol' adage, "Th' pen is mightier than th' sword", But, those in control o' our destiny paid no attention. Now we find ourselves in precarious circumstances, an' fear it is too late t' correct th' mistakes. The thing which bothers this senior person is not th' hardships we, who're nearin' th' time when we may leave this ol' world, an' its vail o' tears, but th' innocent younguns, who'll have t' face it all, an' th' mistakes made afore 'em. Th' Good Book says it, "The sins o' th' fathers shall fall on heads o' generations t' come", an' it seems that they will.
