Box 205 • Crystal Lake Illinois 60014 • (815)459-2641 By Ellie Rusin Wildlife Committee Frank Conibear, trapper, wrote: "It is probable that no instrument was ever invented that caused as much suffering as the common steel trap." The trap slams shut with bone- crushing impact and holds the animal in a vise like grip. Many animals chew or twist their legs off to escape. It is estimated that close to 100 million aftimals and birds are trapped annually in this country; 4 out of 5 are "trash animals1' bearing worthless pelts (including dogs and cats) but caught anyway by the in discriminate trap. This does not include the millions of animals who escape, only to die later of infection or blood loss or the baby animals starving to death having lost a mother to the'trap. Illinois is one of a number of states that still allows the use of the leg-hold trap but, against a good deal of op position, Helping Paws in tends to work hard to to something about it. HP's "Ban the Leg-hold Trap" posters are finally printed and ready for use. More help is needed with disseminating the posters and replenishing the at tached reply cards as necessary. A meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, in the Helping Paws office, 465 Virginia street, Crystal Lake, for anyone interested in helping HP promote this cause. Those who would like to help but cannot make the meeting, can call 344-1531, 385-7367, or 459-6356, or leave a message at the office. The posters are being located in public places throughout the county, as well as Animal Control and the Helping Paws office. Any suggestions regarding ad ditional sites for posting will be welcome Please remember also, that the reply cards can and should be sent to both state and federal senators and representatives and their names and addresses shojuld be available from the county clerk in the county courthouse. Keep in mind that some new legislators will be installed in January and they should be contacted also. It is important to send personally written follow-up letters in addition to the reply cards for greater impact. The congressman will be impressed by numbers of contacts ob jecting to the traps but, like the rest of us, will be most responsive to personally- written letters rather than just form letters. The animals cannot vote or speak for themselves. Let's get to work for them! All pet adoptions must be validated by the signing of a contract along with the adoption fee which includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery from a vet of HP's choice, or a deduction from the cost of the surgery if done by a vet of your choice. NOVEMBER lls II "Coping With Holidays" Free, Four-Week Seminar "Coping with the holidays" is a free four-week seminar offered by Family Service and Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County starting Tuesday, Nov 25. from 7 to 9 p.m. Many have a fairy tale image of the holidays that can lead to stress, depression and-or heart break. Kids screaming, financial difficulties, loneliness, fighting, last minute conflicts can be as much a part of the holidays as Christmas trees, decorations, happy family reunions and Sania Claus Stress is an unavoidable part of the holidays, but here are ways to cope with stress that can work for an in dividual instead of against him. In this course par ticipants will look at their limits and-or expectations of the holidays, and how to share these expectations or limits with others in an ef fective wav "An example of this", according to Jackie Man- sholt. Consultation and Education coordinator for the center, "may be sharing with your children that they will not be getting all they want for Christmas, or finding someone who can spend the holidays with you." Call 338-4750 for reser vations for the free four- week seminar. 18 HOLES OF GOLF j (EACH PLAYER MUST PRESENT ONE COUPON) Good For 1980 . | Season Only!! j . -HAPPY HOUR-- 4 > Draft Beer 50* Cocktails $1.00 j MONDAY THRU FRIDAY ® > 4 - 6 P M L o u n g e O n l y e f x FREE Hors'deouvres Wednesday Thursday & Friday Only Dining Room Closed Monday I Tuesday FRiOAY FISH FRY SUNDAY BRUNCH CHAPEL HIL 2500 N.
