As with previous University of Chicago medical residents who participated in a longer McHenry hospital program, Dr. Schaefer and Dr. Birn baum studied the legislative basis for EMS organizations and functions; the local, state and federal agencies which implement this legislation; the planning and response of the EMS system to disasters; and the practical arrangements for interaction of hospitals, fire departments, rescue squads, police and other public safety agencies. "Dr. Schaefer and Dr. Birnbaum are investigating all of the concerns of the EMS system", according to Kathleen LaGreca, R.N., EMT-P, director of the Emergency Medical Ser vices and preceptor of the program.
