Both men and women seem to have become more aware of their health and appear ance -- and of the role fra grances and skin care prepa rations play in presenting a better face to the world. Why not give a gift that plays up this body aware ness this Christmas? To satisfy the needs of today's fashion-conscious and well-groomed male, toiletry manufacturers offer a variety of scents in appeal ing gift packages. For exam ple, Millionaire by Mennen has three new gift sets which will make every man "feel like a million" this Christ mas. Another choice is the holiday gift box of Chaz which contains moisturizing after-shave balm, after shave and cologne. Best of all, these sets will serve a man's grooming needs long after the holiday season is over. Designer or other prestige collections are particularly nice for the mature woman. Norell, Bill Blass, Chloe or Ultima's Ciara are all favor ites of the over-45 group. Or perhaps you need something more suited to the woman who is well- versed in the use of cosmet ics -- and always uses the best. Then you might want to consider the new collection of makeup brushes being of fered this Christmas by. Chanel. The collection con sists of five natural hair brushes that can be used to achieve the look and preci sion of professional makeup application. An eyeliner brush for a subtle outline of her eyes, a lip brush to define and color her lips, a contour shadow brush for controlled applica tion of eye color, a brow and lash groomer for shaping and separating lashes and brows and a powder brush for sweeps of color and a smooth finish. These five brushes will line, contour and blend her face into new dimensions. Packaging has always in trigued and attracted pur chasers of cosmetics and this Christmas is no differ ent. Package designer Georges Gotlib sees an "inti mate connection between the bottle and the scent it contains," according to a quotation in Women's Wear Daily's fragrance supple ment. "The fragrance must be reflected in the bottle. A luxurious, rich scent should have a a different kind of light bottle than a young, one," he asserts. You can find many pack ages which typify this sea son's revived romantic mood. One Charlie Christmas collection suggests contem porary streamers in bright pink, white and blue, sof tened with classic flowers and doves. The Chloe Noel collection also embodies ro mance. Combine the luxuri ous feeling of satin, silver and peach, and you get a sense of the rich, warm, feminine mood of the Chloe fragrance. The elegance of the Chanel makeup brushes has been played up in their pack age -- their own black quilt ed jewelry roll. Perhaps one of the more outlandish collections for this Christmas comes from Elizabeth Arden. Twenty- one porcelains contain Eliz abeth Arden fragrance and bath products in addition to specially packaged gift sets of Blue Grass, Memoire Cherie, Cabriole and Arden for Men Sandalwood. So, give a gift this Christ mas that not only pampers but also enhances the beauty of its surroundings. Give the gift of a pampered body. Prices may be going up, but holiday bargains are available There's good news and there's bad news! The latter is that prices are continuing to go tip* up, up, with no end in sight. The good news is, even in the midst of this gloomy economic time, there are still bargains to be had. You've just got to know where to look. For instance, mail order buy ers know that it's not too early to begin holiday shopping as early as August, and the smartest ones go directly to the Lillian Vernon catalog. Known for both great value and unusual items since 1951, the company is featuring quite a few nifty gift items that haven't increased in price for at least two years. A perennial favorite is an au thentic antique bobbin candle stick. This is an actual I9thcen- tury 9" hardwood bobbin with a metal spool at one end and wood inlays at the other. They come straight from the mills in Yorkshire and some really look their age, providing a fun do-it-yourself restoration project. They are easily re- HAVING TROUBLE finding the perfect Christmas present on a limited budget? For $3.98 each, you can af ford to do both. A great gift for the gourmet cook is Lillian Vernon's own 10 piece tool set in an earthenware pitcher. This item has been available for years at the low price of only $6.98. All included The ten tools include five wooden spoons--spoons that get into corners, some with slots for draining, some with holes for mixing, and paddles for fold ing. There are two giant forks with wooden handles for lifting and turning large roasts, and three different-sized tinned whisks for whipping. As an extra gift for your favorite "him," there is a 2%" pocket-tool kit--it's wafer-slim and amazingly compact, but it contains a nail file, sharp scis sors, bottle opener, screwdriver and a superb stainless steel razor-sharp knife blade. All this is protected in a hand some leather-look cover, with initials custom engraved on an oval brass disc. All this for $3.98. Unusual items There are toys for kids, gifts for your favorite hostess, many for unbelievably low prices. These "bargains" typify the Lillian Vernon policy of great gifts at affordable prices. These holiday gifts can be or dered from Lillian Vernon, Dept. MCG, 510 S. Fulton Ave., Mt. Vernon, NY 10550. Be sure to add an additional $1.00 to cover shipping. When ordering, also ask for a new catalog containing hund reds of new, never before of fered items, many imported from Europe and many per sonalized.
