Hazardous wastes are the inevitable by-products of the manufacturing processes which produce the goods that consumers demand. Until recently the disposal of most hazardous waste was haphazard and uncontrolled. Love Canal in Niagara Falls. N Y. is a well-publicized chemical nightmare but is not, unfortunately, an isolated incident. Hazardous substances, once thought to have been harmlessly disposed of years ago are now showing up in well water. New federal regulations, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976, define hazardous waste and set standards for producers, transporters and disposers of the waste. RCRA attempts to regulate hazardous wastes from the cradle to the grave. Sponsored by the Chicago section of the American Chemical society, in con junction with the chemistry faculty of Harper college, a Science and Public Policy symposium will be con ducted Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Building J, Room J 143 of Harper college, Algonquin and Roselle roads, Palatine. The panelists will include Dr. Eugen Meyer (U.S. En vironmental Protection agency), Dr. Stacey Daniels (Dow Chemical Co.), Dr. Robert Ginsberg (Citizens for a Better Environment), Stanely Whitebloom (Metropolitan Sanitary district) and Robert Piet ( R r o w n i n g - F e r r i « I n - dustries). "Are the new federal regulations too late, too stringent or too costly?" "Will the ultimate cost be borne by the consumer?", "Will there be a shortage of suitable disposal sites?" and "Will local communities oppose nearby disposal sites?" are among the questions expected to be discussed by the panelists. The meeting is open to the public and there is no charge. Offer Film On Childbirth On Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. the film, "Childbirth for the Joy of It", will be presented at the Congregational Un iversalis! church, 225 Dean street, Woodstock. The film shows five couples giving birth using the Bradley method. Denise Wyse, an affiliated teacher, will present the film along with a talk on nutrition and exer cises during pregnancv.
