PAGE 7 - PLAIN DEALER • WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 3. It*. Hutchinson Fights For Big Ten Javelin Johnsburg MVP's Honored Tom Hutchinson, 1976 graduate of McHenry High School, said he is preparing to charge the Big Ten with sex discrimination if a proposal to put the javelin event in the conference's mens track program is rejected by Big Ten athletic directors. As a javelin thrower for the University of Illinois in Champaign, Hutchinson has not been able to compete in conference matches although the Big Ten girls track program does have the javelin included. Since June, the U of I senior has cleared one ob stacle in his fight. On Oct. 29, the Big Ten track coaches voted to adopt the javelin by a 6-4 vote, but the final vote by athletic directors will take place Dec. 1-3. Hutchinson is hopeful of a favorable response, he was not encouraged by the coaches slim approval margin. He said that those coaches who voted against the proposal did not have enough "concern for the athletes." Arguments against the proposal include the financial difficulty in adding Hutchinson another event, and that most Big Ten schools do not have adequate facilities to field a javelin throw effectively. It is argued that women don't throw the javelin that far, so space limitations are not that much of a problem for girls. Hutchinson said he will prepare his sex discrimination case before the athletic directors meeting to show that he is "not bluffing." "It seemed like a clear-cut case," Hutchinson noted after talking to a few lawyers. Johnsburg Wrestling Starts First Year "This is absolutely a building year," according to Don March, coach of Johnsburg's first-year wrestling program In Johnsburg's first look at competition, Marian Central narrowly squeezed by host Johnsburg, 31-30 last Tuesday. Johnsburg won contests at 105 pounds, 119 pounds, 138 pounds, 145 pounds and 185 pounds, but lost by a close 3-2 score at 132 pounds, which cost them the match. March has set individual goals for his first season. He feels that junior Mike Dalan, sophomore Mike Hurkes, and freshman Lars Swanson can go pretty far in state competition, but he doesn't expect to be much over .500 as a team. The Skyhawks will take on Richmond at home Dec. 4. The Pilgrims had nothing on us. We got the bird without firing a shot. Something comes over me every time I sit down to a feast. It is the thought that some people are hungry and going to stay hungry. It may be a noble thought, but it doesn't take long for me to recover when turkey and dressing are on my plate. We watched the Bears- Detroit Lions game in the afternoon. Wow! The Bears put on a great drive to tie the game as time ran out. Overtime was sudden death if every there was one. Winning the toss of the coin, then returning the kick for a 95-yard touchdown run was something not even a Hollywood screen writer could concoct. Everybody and his brother thinks the Bears were robbed in the previous game. As great as Walter Payton is, he learned something in that game. You don't let go of the ball until you hear the whistle or the official comes after the ball. In sports we see some officials who are quick on the whistle. Some are slow. Oh, no! Just heard a cooking expert announce a recipe for making peanut butter soup. That gags me. Couldn't believe my eyes. A good, hard look told me the license plate ahead was "CREEP". Why tell the world? Probably a nice guy with the wrong tag. Thinking back. The week before Thanksgiving an article appeared in print warning people against overeating on the holiday. That was a waste of space. You might as well toss a fish into the water and tell it not to swim. Met Roy Fitzgerald in an out-of-town eatin' place and he wondered what Bimbo's would think of us for deserting them on the oc casion. We met there many times. Roy goes on like 01' Man River. A former athlete, now a baseball scout and official in high school athletics. He was kind in saying he reads S.I.H. regularly then he had to spoil it by saying how much he enjoys that column written by - What's - His - Name. The names comes to me now -- Dick Rabbitt. (You know, the Peoples' Choice). The phone rang early one morning and who was on the other end of the line but our old friend "Zeke" from way out in Arizona, told him it sounded like he was calling from Main Street. He and Charlotte really thrive on that Arizona climate. Fox Hole Evo was another November baby. He fibs a little. Told us he is only half as old as Larry Nimsgren. If the story were true, we would have to say that Larry does right well for a man of his age. He and Bill Funk (I don't know who else) put on their long drawers, over shoes, mittens and stocking caps and strode forth to the golf course. Rugged individuals. Listening to a panel discussion about the economy of our country, all I could hear from one panelist was "The problem is". Kept waiting for him to give us a solution or cure. A group discussion about turkeys brought out memories of the old butcher shops with sawdust on the floor. Turkeys were dressed and hung on hooks against the wall behind the cutting block. You took them home and spent hours pulling out the pin feathers. From one retiree to another comes the following that says it all: It's nice to be retired And call my time my own, I can sleep late in the morning And lounge around at home. Don't even set my alarm clock So that I won't be late, Don't have to fight the traffic To get to work by eight. It's nice to be retired But I really must confess, The only thing that I don't like Is that my income is much less. But I'll gladly take the good and bad I just can't have it all, And I would rather be retired Than not be here at all.... author unknown Lcompliments of Vincent H. Adams) Correction In the Nov. 19 issue of the Plaindealer, Tumbleweed coach Duane Sperry was quoted as saying, "...we are the only form of gymnastics around here." Since that time the Plaindealer has learned of another McHenry gymnastics program, as well as programs in Crystal Lake and Woodstock. . . WAS YOUR PICTURE IN THE PAPER?
