He will discuss all major forms of financial aid that are offered to students who plan to con tinue their education past high school. This program is for students who are college' vocational, or technical and trade school bound. Wentworth is a counselor in student services at MCC and well-versed in financial aid. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the high school. Parents and students have been invited to attend. Target System Speeds Veterans' Benefits Administrator of Veterans Affairs Max Cleland has announced completion of a three-year development program to bring the ad vantages of computer technology to processing claims for Veterans Ad ministration compensation, pension and education benefits. The new system - known as Target - will reduce claims processing time significantly and speed payment of checks totaling $14 billion annually to veterans and their families, according to Cleland. Target replaces many manual operations that were used in handling inquiries and claims. VA's 57 regional offices in the United States and Puerto Eico are now able to enter, modify and retrieve data via a sophisticated computer system that is currently capable of handling some 160,000 transactions daily. Part of the hardware used by the agency includes 3,000 video display terminals and 800 remote printers installed in the regional offices. Service improvements offered by Target are many and the agency expects to realize operating savings of up to $200 million over the next ten years, Cleland said. The system will provide faster adjustments to active claims payments and quicker action on new claims. Status inquiries from beneficiaries which previously required days and weeks to answer can now often be resolved in seconds. Jerusalem Cherry, A Perfect Holiday Plant In recent years, the Jerusa lem Cherry, Solanum Pseudo- Capsicum, has become a favo rite house plant during the holi day season. It's a cheerful plant with bright red berries that last for many weeks. One of the secrets of success ful growing is keeping the soil moist, but not soggy. Placing the pot on a tray of wet pebbles will increase the humidity. Spraying the foliage often will keep the leaves clean, prevent the berries from dropping be fore they mature and reduce the chances of red spider mites attacking the plant. Jerusalem Cherries require a rich type of soil mixed with a little sand for good drainage and a cool, sunny location. After the berries have dropped, through normal growth, reduce the amount of water but never let the plant go dry. After three or four weeks, cut the plant back sharply and wait for new growth to appear. Cuttings can be rooted and the seed from the fallen berries can be dried and planted in fine sandy soil for additional plants. * Prune the plant back in Vie spring and place outdoors in the shade during the summer months to harden up for the fol lowing season. • ' BulHn or Portable SD551 Only $38995 Portable GSC550 ONLY $399« •My to attach to me* by-paaa lata you gat tap watar whan With All Those Conveniences on Both: • 5 wash and dry cycles, including Power Scrub* for pots and pans • Multi-Level wash action gets dishes really clean • Built-in soft food disposer a Quiet.. sound insulated • Tuff Tub® intefiarfesists staining, will not chip. -C 1 Serving McHenry foi GAR 50 Years Sales Service Appliance 1241 N.
