Can a town establish a tradition in eight years? If so McHenry is a town with a tradition of Christmas sharing - a town where, if you haven't shared the joy of Christmas with someone less fortunate, you are missing something. "If you plan to share, please help us by being early. Deliveries will be made Sunday, Dec. 21. Last year 103 families with 254 children were remembered with food and gifts. Hodgson's letter of Dec. 3 to the Public Pulse, this statement was made, 'If our schools are in real trouble, perhaps our teachers could do without raises that raise and raise our tax bills.' "I realize that increased taxes are an additional burden on an already overloaded paycheck. "I do not feel that just because I am a teacher I should do without a raise. I have not heard of any working group turning down raises to hud the line of inflation. When and if I do, then I, too, will consider giving up my earned raise. "Sincerelv. "Patricia A. Sea ton" Symbols Of Christmas 12 Bulls A-Bellering? Had you lived in an earlier time at Christmas, your true love might have received "bulls a-bellering", "lords a- limping." "tailors stit ching", "five Limerick oysters," "three gray elephants," "an Arabian baboon", or "part of a juniper tree." These are but a few of the variations of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" ac cording to Lucinda Hut chinson, reference librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle (UICC). The popular song, which originated as a memory game centuries ago in Europe, is one of the oldest Christmas carols still being sung. The most widely performed version today, however, is this traditional English carol: "On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love sent to me, t w e l v e d r u m m e r s drumming eleven pipers piping ten lords a-leaping nine ladies dancing eight maids a-milking seven swans a-swimming six geese a-laying five golden rings four calling birds three French hens two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree." Accordingly, then in the twelve days of Christmas, your true love will have received: 12 drummers drumming 22 pipers piping 30 lords a-leaping 36 ladies dancing 40 maids a-milking 42 swans a-swimming 42 geese a-laying 40 golden rings 36 calling birds 30 French hens 22 turtle doves and 12 partridges: in 12 pear trees. The Sunday School classes at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, 404 N. Green street, McHenry, will present their annual Christmas program Sunday, Dec. 21, at the 8:90 a.m. worship service. Children from 3 years old to young people in high school will participate in a service of readings and songs entitled Symbols of Christmas. Everyone is invited to attend and join in this opportunity to praise, worship and fellowship together. Some of the Sunday School teachers are shown preparing for the annual program: front row, left to right, Linda Panning, Sherrie Moy and Marge Leary; second row. Colleen Slvertsen, Birdie Bergdahl and Margery Wahler; third row, Kristin Stuhr, Leith Honning, Judith Warren, Ruth Roper, Kathie Behm and Linda Staveteig.
