PAGE • - PLAINDEALER • FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12,1W0 Plaindealer Holiday Tourney Set The Third Annual John- sburg Freshman Basketball Tournament will begin Dec. 16 at Johnsburg High School, according to Athletic Director Jim Meyers. Hie Round-Robin affair will feature freshman teams from McHenry, Round Lake, Richmond and Johnsburg and will continue through Dec. 18. On Dec. 16, McHenry, who has won the tourney the last two years, will take on On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt The Warriors won a couple of nice ball games last weekend in the friendly confines of Buckner gym. They are a scrappy bunch of fellows, make a lot of mistakes, but seemed to get the job done against Cary Grove and Grant. , Don't know if it was a good omen or not, but S.I.H. did not attend either game and the Warriors won a couple We'll give him a chance Tuesday against Woodstock, he will never miss a Woodstock game if he can help it. If the Warriors lose, then coach Ludwig may make some future arrangement for the Irishman. Pat Wirtz's girls team will get under way tomorrow at Lake Zurich, then on Monday they play host to Wauconda at 6p.m. Plenty of time to get a bite to eat, and then enjoy girls basketball at West campus. Mike Shanahan's swimmers split a pair last week. It looks as if the veteran coach may have a good team this year which is not unusual. He does a fine job with a limited number of boys. Marty Sobczak's grapplers tied wtih Cary Grove last week. We hope he can keep his squad healthy and free of injuries this season. For the past several seasons it seems that the genial coach has had his share of tough luck. Maybe the tide will turn this season. f The Warrior student cheering section, which in the past has been a great asset to the Warriors, is becoming an embarrassment to everyone concerned. Their behavior last Friday night was a disgrace to the school and community. Throwing objects has no place in an athletic event. Someone could be hurt bad, and when the officials had to stop the game and get Coach Ken Ludwig to walk over and say a few words, it was the last straw. So you students, clean up your act, it is not funny, you are not helping the team, you are only bringing disfavor on yourselves and the school. You can make aU the noise you want, but leave out the throwing of objects dh the floor. Let's show our opponents g^uit we are good sports win or lose. fTvoihgliown memory lane we take you back to the 1953- w season, the first for McHenry in the North Suburban Both they and Woodstock tied with 7 and 7 for 4th place. The Warriors won this game between the two schools 50 to 43 under the coaching of the "Old Warrior" Cliff Fulton. Johnsburg will match-up against McHenry on Dec. 18 in the early game while Round Lake and Richmond will end the Tourney in the late game. After trailing 41-39 after three periods, the Johnsburg Skyhawks used the free throw to beat Grant Tuesday night in Johnsburg, 63-56. m, Johnsburg traded baskets with 47-46 lead, then used the charity i the victory. (Tom) was four for four, Novy (Chuck) was two for two and Neiss (Rick) hit five for six as we steadily pulled ahead of them," Coach Bob Kies said. The Skyhawks held a comfortable 15-8 lead at the end of one period as Neiss and Pieper took over where they left off against North Boone and hit most of the first quarter points on short jumpers and breakaway layups. The second quarter changed things a bit, however, as Grant outscored Johnsburg 18-10 and took a one point halftime lead, 26-25. Both teams traded baskets in the third period as Johnsburg trailed by two going into the final stanza. Coack Kies had his theory as to why Grant folded slightly in the fourth quarter. "After we took a 47-46 lead, Grant applied more defensive pressure and we just slowed things up to alleviate that pressure," Kies noted. "They (Grant) just had too many aggressive fouls too early in the fourth quarter instead of waiting until later." Kies was pleased with the consistent play of his troups and was excited that his squad was able to keep pace with the size of Grant. "We were dead even in the board category, 37-37," Kies remarked. "Frank Jakubicek had 9 and Chuck Novy pulled down 10 of them." The coach noted that upcoming teams will have to be aware of Jakubicek in the future. "Even though he had only 3 points, Frank went to the basket well and did a lot of little things in the middle to open things up for out two big guns (Neiss and Pieper)," Kies said."He drew three or four fouls last night while going to the basket and if opponents start to key on our other scorers, Jakubicek is gonna have his night." Neiss led all scorers with 25 points, as Pieper hit for 20 points and Chuck Novy tallied 13 to go with his 10 rebounds. Russ Beck added two points and Jakubicek threw in three points to complete the Skyhawk scoring. Grant was led in scoring by senior guard Mark Moats with 20 and another senior guard Les Rosing with 16. On Friday, Johnsburg will clash with Shark rival Marengo, who is 4-2 overall and 1-0 in Shark competition, beating Harvard, 60-57 last Friday. "Marengo will want to try and slow us down," Kies said. "But we are going to have to play our game and keep doing the things that got us where we are." Kies is looking for something different from Marengo this year. "Marengo has changed their offense a little bit, using a style they haven't shown opponents in a few years,"the coach noted. "We're just gonna have to try to control the tempo." Johnsburg will contend with ho6t Hononegah on Saturday after the Marengo battle. Joel Wakitsch Jacobs, Woodstock Next Warrior Foes Fresh from a 75 to 61 victory over Cary Grove in the opening game of the Fox Valley conference, the Warriors of Ken Ludwig will take te the road this evening. Tonight they travel down tq Jacobs to take on the Golden Eagles of Ken Slimko. the Eagles, a 52 to 49 overtime loser to Central last week, will be gunning for a victory. Picked to be high in the standings, and no doubt that they will be, the Eagles boast two six foot, six inch players, Joe Schaefer an All-Conference last year, and Mark Ault, both seniors Slimko has four other let- terman to rely on this season. John Turskey a 6'1" guard along with 5'11" guard John Lipinsky. Jim Vega 5'9" guard and 6'2" forward Mike Corriveau who is hampered with a football injury. With all that size, the Warriors will really have to scrap tonight. The Eagles are prone to the press, which the Warriors do very well, and this in itself can make it a real ball game. If the Warriors can continue the play of last weekend, the Eagles may be in for another surprise this evening. WOODSTOCK HERE TUESDAY In a rare midweek game the Warriors will host Woodstock Tuesday night. It should be a whale of a ball game Dick Rabbitt Marian Wins One, Loses To Marmion Marian lost its 1980 West Suburban Catholic Con ference opener last Friday 72-56 against Marmion, but came back Tuesday to defeat Harvard, 82-72 at home In the Marmion loss, Marian traded baskets for almost the whole game and at one time' trailed 56-52, but in hitting only 6 of "19 free throws, Marian fell off in the final minutes of the game Carl Brown led Marian scorers with 18, while Brad Gregory added 10. Marian led at the end of quarter one, 16-15, fell behind at the half, 34-28 and trailed at the th^ee quarter mark. 44-39.
